Sure you do. Some smog techs don't care about visual and only care about what comes out the tail pipe as it should be. You either just find a place that don't care about visual passing or register vehicle in a zip code that doesn't require smog checks at all and there are still many areas in California that do not require smog checks on any year vehicles when renewing.
