Got my weekends mixed up. For some reason I thought this past Sunday was Father's Day. Even called my father. Oops.

Guess I posted this a week too early.

I have never heard of a headstone being engraved with "I wish I would have spent more time at work".

True, but I think this goes beyond that...the fact that some of us (certainly me included) don't always appreciate the time we actually do spend with our kids. My daughter just turned 18 last month and I kick myself for not making more out of the time we actually spent together, let alone the time we didn't.

I had mine very young and didn't appreciate how precious she was and what a gift it was to have her until she was a pre-teen. By then it was too late to get back the early memories that most of us want to carry with us as we get older.

Time has tought me that it is more about the journey than the destination. I was too block headed in my 20's to realize that.

My situation was very much like yours. Had her very young and raised her on my own from eight months old to now, 18. I wish I'd done a better job then but we still have the opportunity to improve it now.

Tom,
You are correct. I have two daughters 26 and 28. I also had mine young and just want to remind you, you still have time to create memories. I spent a bunch of savings to go on a cruise with my daughters and their husbands years ago. We also spent some savings on a houseboat vacation with my daughters and their husbands.
I enjoy any chance to be with these lovely ladies that I have created and molded, and am constantly amazed at how much better they are at life than I ever was. My daughters are very goods friends of mine, and I cherish the time I get to spend with them.
I hope they have good memeories of their childhoods, I was not always home at night or every weekend.
You are a good man, I can tell by the things you worry about. I am sure your daughter has very good memories of the time you were able to spend with her.

Happy Fathers day! (Sunday)
Steve

My dad realized the same thing on my 18th birthday. He left a note on my bed apologizing for missing out on most of my childhood because he traveled so much trying to provide for us. Even though I didn't get time with him growing up, I think that he took it to heart and tried to be around a lot more for my younger brother and sisters (I'm the oldest of 4). You live and you learn.
