Default Long Tubes in NorCal

Anyone out there have long tubes on your DD? I realize they are a bit...uh....unsupported....but just curious.

Budgeting for the exhaust....

I run AR 1 3/4's on my DD and I'm in Livermore if you want to check them out. PITA to install in the driveway but I got it done. They make great power too.

I don't think he is talking about headers. Maybe he is taking about straight pipes for the exhaust?

I would imagine that his use of "unsupported" is just a nice way of saying California's smog rules s&@(!!!!!

Mainly I'm interested in how difficult it is to get smogged when you have Long tubes. I would much rather have long tubes....

Sorry to be so unclear...I'm looking into AR LT headers with catted x-pipe and stingers....

Thanks for everyone's help

Long Tubes of any kind won't pass the visual inspection if they look. The only reason I can figure out is that the factory cats have to be removed. It doesn't make any difference if the new system has cats. As far as I know no LT manufacturer has not gone to the expense of getting a CARB number, which would make them CA legal.

Just a friendly piece of advice with your above decision. if you are thinking about going with the AR Lt's you need to look into an exhaust that isn't known for scaring women and children from blocks away. The reason I say this is because I had my AR's with B&B bullets before the PRT's and let me just say, INSANE noise level. The Stingers easily rival the Bullets in sounds. You should come by and hear the PRT system I have, it's mean but isn't "give granny a heart attack" loud. But the real reason for the post is that Livermore PD are complete and utter Aholes when it comes to modified cars. A loud exhaust is an instant ticket in this town!

I had the Ti exhaust with LT's, and switched to B&B's... LOVE how loud it is, and can easliy mask it under 1500RPM.

Is that an actual ticket or do you get a "fix it" type ticket?

Hearing what you're saying...I have a Mustang (I know...I know) that has a flowmaster exhaust on it and I got accused of SOUNDING too fast in the neighborhood.

Thanks for the offer....may just take you up on that.

If you get a catted mid pipe with the LT's most of the time it will pass the sniffer, but like said above it will not pass visual.

Some of the smog shops will not look too close if you pass the smog test. I asked one shop and the owner stated that he can get away with passing headers because he can always say that you did not have headers on when he pass the smog.

Thats a good shop
But you can aways go to a shop that will give a pre-smog, that way if the tech over looks the LTs and you pass the sniffer..then go ahead and have them do the smog. My $.02

I am looking at LTs and corsa extremes but have been reluctant because of the day I need to get my car smogged. I think I am just gonna go for it and hope for the best 5 years from now, when it is time to get it smogged.

You also have to remember, you can be required to take even a brand new car or even a pre 76 year in for a smog inspection/run on the machine at any time (rare, but it happens as the new car 5 year rule doesn't apply if the officer thinks the engine components have been changed). All it takes is a cop to write you a ticket for modded exhaust and then you have to take the car in to a referee station for a check and they do check EVERYTHING from correct items on the engine/exhaust, run it on the machine and even do a decibel meter check on loudness at idle and at 75% of the redline on engine. Its happened to me before and if there is no cats on the car be prepared for a possible and pretty likely $2500 fine which the judge will not lower or dismiss. <---don't ask me how I know all this...

More bad news...Los Angeles area has already started using roadside exhaust monitors and Ive also seen a couple here in the bay area this year as well being tested. They are set up on quite a few freeway on ramps and as you drive through the monitoring beam it registers your exhaust emissions very accurately and if it reads out of limits or excessive a picture gets taken of the license plate and you get a letter in the mail requiring the car in question to be brought in and checked.. The smog nazis are out there but it doesn't stop me in my modding on quite a few of my cars new and older.

It must be a restrictive area.Because of all the element's concerned e.g air, temps and moisture in the air not to mention more than one lane of traffic on some ramps..how can it be accurate?
Now I can see it at a toll booth monitoring exhaust levels and possibly triggering a camera as a car goes single file through the area.
Still hard to believe....but who knows
