I swear my 2004 HUD is getting dimmer. In the sunlight it is very hard to see and it wasn't always this way. Or maybe it's just me.
I'm considering buying a new one for $250 but I'm not certain it will really be any better.
I'd like to compare mine to another one locally. I'd be happy to come to you. I live in San Francisco and I drive down the peninsula every weekday. Marin is convenient on weekends. Preferably it should be daylight when we meet.
Are you wearing new sunglasses? Polarized glasses will make your HUD virtually dissappear.
I have two identical pairs of sunglasses. One is polarized which I wear all the time. The other is not, and I only use those when driving the Vette.

No new sunglasses. Mine are polarized, and it does impair the HUD, but it still seems to be getting worse.
I can't stand non-polarized because of all the glare off the dash, esp. the joints around the HUD housing.
My car seemed to dim years ago but is still usable. If I set it for daylight it is too bright at night. My neighbor's '02 is much brighter than my '99.
I'm not sure if there is a light sensor that changes the intensity. If so that could be the problem.
I still have to manually turn it down at night. I've never noticed it change intensity on its own. If there were such a sensor, is it something I could fix without replacing the entire unit?

There is no sensor. It just shows up much brighter at night to your "night eyes". It's like a flashlight. In the afternoon I could shine it in your eyes from 10 feet away and it wouldn't bother you. At night you would be blinded by the brightness.
With the top off and the sun out, I need to jack up the brightness a few nothches - and that's pretty new being an 08 coupe. I'm mid-Peninsula, if you're still concerned and want to compare sometime.
I guess I should have qualified that I wanted to compare with another C5. The C6 HUD is a different design, so even if I saw a bright one, it wouldn't really tell me anything about what I could expect from a new C5 HUD.
