Maine is loaded with things to see and do. It really depends on how much time, and to some extent how much money you want to spend. Also what type things you like. The coastal region is probably the most popular area to explore, great seafood, gorgeous scenery, but it is also going to be the most congested with other tourists like yourself, especially during the summer months. Helps to make some plans, but you can also simply head to Maine and have an adventure. I've traveled Maine without lodging reservations...preferring to see where we end up in the late afternoon...then find a cozy place to spend the night. You can have a great time discovering what's around the next bend in the road in Maine...

I would recommend Acadia National Park. It is a great drive with lots of scenery. These are from a few years ago when we were up there. Have fun...

Maine is a big state what areas are you traveling too or plan to and how much time do you plan on staying there.

Thank you for the responses. We will be there for at least a week...maybe 10 days, in August or September. My wife likes to plan, plan, plan; but I suggested plan a couple things and wing the rest of it. If we find a place we really like, either stay an extra day, or maybe hit it on the way back. Thanks again!

I would like to second RaceNH's recommendation of Acadia National Park including adjacent Bar Harbor. Within it is Somes Sound, the only real Fjord to my knowledge in the US. Cadillac Mountain is over 1500 feet high and offers the farthest view along the US East Coast, not to mention the prettiest. Along the way up the coast North of Portland, worth a visit all by itself, is Boothbay Harbor followed by Rockland and Camden, the latter two on the west coast of Penobscot Bay. Belfast is a nice lunch stop a little further North of Camden. As others have pointed out, there is no shortage of places well worth visiting in Maine. Be aware that nights can get chilly in August and even more so in September so you might want to be prepared for that.
We have been sailing to Maine for 3 weeks or so for many of the last 30 years. I never get tired of it.
Good Luck

Driving up the coast, you'll find a lot of nice scenery and small towns. Boothbay Harbor, Camden and Bar Harbor are all nice places to stay. Definitely visit Acadia National Park and drive up Cadillac Mountain on a clear day for amazing views.

My Wife and I go to Ogunquit ME (southern coastal) every mid-Sept. for 3-4 days.
Beautiful scenic sandy beach, many great restaurants, overall very relaxing.

Heading up to Maine next week for vacation. The recommendations that you’ve received on here are pretty much all the things that I do. To add to that, I’ve done Moosehead Lake once and Monhegan Island a couple times oh and Freeport is a cool spot. Otherwise we stay in the Warren/Union area, travel to Bar Harbor for a few days and hang out in the town / visit Acadia National park.

I would highly recommend trying to get out to Monhegan Island if at all possible.

Default Camden Maine

if you go through Camden be sure to drive up the paved auto road up to the top of Mt. Batte. You will se the most beautiful view of a Maine harbor. Also Acadia park. Drive up Cadalac Mt for sunset. Awesome!!

We are all different, there is no absolute right and wrong, and it's whatever works for you. That said, I prefer having a general idea of where we want to go but winging it. To me it prevents the stress of "I love it here, but we have another 3 hours we have to go to get to the motel reservation!" We spent 3 weeks out west in the Vette and it was amazing how our plans changed on a whim on a given day. To us, the fun is in the adventure itself, not in having to follow a mandated schedule.

As for Maine - here's Houlton, near the New Brunswick border;

Thanks, again for all the suggestions. We have reservations for a couple nights in both Boothbay and Bar Harbors, but we'll be winging it the other 6 or 7 days!!
