We used to go there for the SCCA races in the early - mid 60's. Come to think of it I used to take Barb there on dates…… Pretty relaxed and casual back then and the pits were dirt and under the trees. I remember seeing a red 63 Vette coupe running with a three cylinder/2 cycle Saab nipping at his heels at every turn.

I believe it was the very first permanent road course (even before the Glen) in the U.S. Looks like they plan to open in June, 2014 but not sure what races or driver association events will be on the schedule.

Here is a link to the track web site which has a layout of the new track: http://www.thompsonspeedway.com/new-track.php The site says it's 1.7 miles long and follows the old course.

Here's a link with a historical perspective: http://www.thompsonhistorical.org/co..._raceway05.htm Note that one of the drivers listed in a 1962 race was Dr. Dick Thompson (no relation!) and he was driving a Corvette of course. You'll also recognize a few other drivers such as Mark Donahue and Bob Holbert.

Definitely something to check out next year.

I'm really looking forward to the new/old Thompson Speedway Road Course. Anytime we get another road course, it's a good thing.

It sounds like the track is making a serious effort, to do the facilities and course right. I was told, that they have spoken to a number of members of the NER SCCA, for input during the construction of the track.

Plans are to have the track open in June. I think the first official event will be a vintage race, put on by the Vintage Racers Group (www.vrgonline.org), June 27-29. I expect that we will be there for that event. We also participate in the NER SCCA's vintage group, the HRG (www.historicracinggroup.com), and anticipate running Thompson with them next year also.

Here are some pictures that were taken of the track, by one of the SCCA HRG racers, a couple weeks ago.
