Penn Turn Pike Road Conditions
Is there any one on the forum that lives close to the Penn Turn Pike and could keep me informed on the road conditions? I am from Central Indiana and bought a 54 Vette in NJ. and will be come by way of the Penn Turn Pike. I know they are getting hammered in NJ but I am not leaving here till Tuesday morning early. Do they keep the turn Pike pretty clean of snow and ice. How anout where it goes thru the mountians is that kept good and clear. I will be pulling a 20' enclosed trailer and I don't need any ice or snow on the highways to cause my trouble. Please let me know about road conditions. Thanks Mike

Can't help with current weather conditions, but there are stretches of that road that some would say should be considered "unimproved" near Wilkes-Barre. A little rain, wind, snow and it gets hairy. It's good that you're looking at the conditions because I would stay off of it if it's not clean.

Mike, it's Glenn from NJ. We spoke last Sat. about the possibly of me looking at that 54 for you.
I think your going to be ok. PennDot does a pretty good job with the PA Turnpike, and from what I'm seeing, it looks like there's going to be very little snow east of Phila. Right now they're only calling for 3-5 inches of snow, 30 miles west of the Philly, compared to about a foot in city. The storm is supposed to be getting out of here Monday morning, so they should have all the major arteries clear by the time you come through.
I'm assuming you'll be running the full east/west length of the Turnpike, from Ohio to NJ. The area that Ben Dis is referring to is part of the North East Extension of the Turnpike, that runs from Philly, north through the Poconos. You will not be going through Wilkes-Barre on your route, or any where near that area.
Do you still have my phone number, or the email containing it? If so, feel free to call me tomorrow afternoon or evening and I'll let you know how things look and what the local news is saying. If you need my number again, send me a PM.

Not sure how much of a detour it would be for you but i prefer route 80.
The Penna Pike is the highway of perpetual construction.

Right now they are saying it will turn mostly sunny by Monday afternoon, and clear Monday night and Tuesday. At least for the Philly area you will be fine.
But to answer the other part of your question, I travel the N/E Extension to the east/west turnpike often and they keep it very good.
Keep a check on these...

Thanks guys for all your help on the road conditions. I think we will be all right leaving Tuesday morning from Central Indiana. We plan on pulling out about 3:00am Tuesday morning. When roads are good in the fall for Corvettes at Carlisle I can make it pulling the trailer in about 9 to 9and 1/2 hrs. We will see what it takes Tuesday. Again guys Thanks for the help. If there is anything I can do for any of you here in central Indiana just let me know. Mike Terry

Mike I live about 2 1/2 miles north of the PA TP near exit 312 ( about 30 miles west of Philly) Road is clear . We had about 6'' here . It's very windy so some drifting but mostly on back roads. The further east you go the more snow. Depending on where in NJ you go you may want to call and ask how much snow they have. NJ did get more snow than here. ---------Ken

Hey Mike, I met you at Carlisle and looked at your '72 BB coupe. I guess you found a buyer if you are picking up a '54 tomorrow, congrats!
But like others said, where are you going in NJ? We got about 2 1/2 feet here in central Jersey. I was just out in town, and the main roads were passable but not pretty. Back roads are still pretty rough. I would expect highways to be in good shape by tomorrow afternoon everywhere in the Garden State. If the car you are getting is in the Philly area, I think you will be fine on back roads too as they got a lot less snow. Anywhere North of exit 8 on the NJ TPKE will likely still be pretty sloppy.

Roads are passable by me in central NJ, right now the issue is the gusting wind blowing snow on the roads and causing white outs.
I say we got less then 12", with the blowing snow my front lawn has like 2" and i have drifts like 18" high.

Thanks guys for all the road conditions they were very helpfull. They have snow out here *** deep to a very tall Indian. There snow is up to my mirrors. The 54 vette that we came out here to get is still in the drive way with about 3' of snow all around it. The people said that when they tryed to clear the drive way yesterday that the 60 mph winds would cover it back up as fast as they could move the snow. We will try to get the car and all the parts Wednesday and head home to Indiana. I dont think we will make it back home. We will not get out of NJ till late Wed. so we will not get home till Thursday some time. I will post pic's of the 54 Corvette for mike Terry when I get time.

That's what I was thinking!!!!
I read in the other thread that you are in Manalapan. That is about 25 miles south of me. They got the same amount of snow, 26-32 inches. That's a lot for us Jersey folk. Highways around here are fine, but back roads are still not good for my Camry, we have only been getting around in my 4wd Exploder.

If the '54 was a basket case, no biggie, but they didn't do the new owner any favors when it came time to shovel it out. I'm pretty much at ground zero for this winter "event" (32" fallen and wind so hard there is nothing on the rooftops adding as much as 7 feet on to drifts. All the main roads are finally passable but many of the turn lanes/exit ramps remain unplowed. Meanwhile our Gov. and Lt. Gov. are BOTH away on vacation. Get a full tank of gas and don't stop again until you are far away from NJ.
BTW, I was in Philly for Christmas and PA main and secondary roads were fine by noon Monday.
