A lot of you here received Danny’s e-mail (see below) on his 35 service anniversary with the ABC/Disney Company. And as you can read about the appalling treatment he received from the corporate HR bureaucrats. Despite what he was told Danny is planning on showing up.
Let’s all show him our support and congratulate him.
Quote:
The Walt Disney Company Disrespects 35 year employee.
I've working for ABC-TV for the past 35 years. Disney is the parent company of ABC. During the summer, I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastasized Renal Cell Carcinoma. There is no cure for this disease. I've been on medical leave since.
I was delighted to receive my invitation to the Disney Service awards dinner to take place at the grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on November 20. This week I received a phone call from Disney in California telling me that I am no longer invited to the service awards dinner because of my medical leave of absence and company policy dictates that employees on medical leave cannot attend company events. I asked the representatives of the company to show me where this is written as I have a copy of the Disney company policy. They said it isn't written anywhere. This really raised my eyebrows. Why would anyone want to keep me from attending a very nice evening celebrating my years of service (more than half my life) with my colleagues at ABC?
In my latter years with ABC I switched to all news coverage for ABC News. I have traveled all over the world to accomplish my assignments. From the middle east to the far east. I have covered Presidential campaigns in 2004 and 2008. I have worked thru countless nights, Thanksgiving holidays, Given up Christmas and New year's day. I have endured Hurricanes, Freezing weather, Floods, terrorist bombings and executions. I even covered presidential functions in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria. I thought it was my turn to sit at one of those tables in the Grand Ballroom. I pose no threat to anyone. I may never get another chance to attend an awards service celebration and to be honored for my 35 years of service to ABC. For a family oriented company like Disney to rescind my invitation using the excuse of an unwritten clause in company policy is just absurd. I am hurt, confused, and very much offended by the company's actions in this matter.
- Danny -
you have just read a release which I sent to select news outlets.

Not acceptable!
Danny, YOU are amazing whether ABC & Disney know it or not. Medical leave is not a valid reason to not honor a dedicated, outstanding employee such as yourself. They should be ashamed of themselves.

GOOD FOR YOU for sending out that release. Keep us posted on any press you get and the progress.
Disney is not a family-oriented company. They just sell their stuff to families. I hope their PR machine is ready. I think you should send the release over the wires across the country. And start a blog about it.
Sorry to hear of such ****ty treatment Danny. Congradulations on surviving 35 yrs. of what must be an incredible journey. Any thought of writing a book about your experiences?, I'd buy it.

I'm very glad to read here that you are attending this event in your 35+ years of dedication along with others like you. I had stopped writing a "respond to all" email suggesting that we all gather at the Waldorf in support and protest to your treatment by this company (or at least one bonehead in this company), in hopes that this person might just get what he (or she) deserves from someone higher than him (or her) self, but then recalled that today was the date of the event, and deleted the email I was writing and came in here. What a nice surprise to read that you ARE acting on this in the way I hoped you would, and are exposing this bonehead for the person they are. I'm a proud friend of yours today Danny!
God bless you Dan, You Sir are a rebel WITH a cause!
I would show up with a plus one and I'd arm the plus one with a video camera to tape any resistance to your presence. I bet FOX news would run with the video.

This is probably one of the most disgraceful things I've ever heard of. I would agree, that you should go, and bring someone to document what happens. Also, calling a Fox reporter wouldn't hurt. They love to see this stuff.
The true issue though, is the fact that corporate America can treat someone this way, after they have dedicated years of fine service to that company. It kind of makes one feel sad for the way things have gone downhill in the US. Greed and lack of moral fiber has taken over, and loyalty, class, and the concept of doing the right thing have fallen by the wayside.
All I can say, is that knowing you personally Danny, gives me the impression that ABC just doesn't know a quality, class act when they are face to face with one.Hold your head up high, and acknowledge what you are due for your acheivements. Everyone here who knows you, realizes what a great guy you are.The many photos you have contributed here to document special occasions are always a source of enjoyment. They can only be a small glimpse of what you have done on the professional level.
I shall raise a glass and toast to you Danny this evening. Well done my friend.
What a load of shyte! Danny, I hope you are sitting at the head table right now listening to the president apologizing for that phone call and guaranteeing the termination of the jackass who made it.
