Northeast Economic Strife Assistance Thread-Look here for help/to give help
Ok, I hope the Mods let this slide as the intention is not to have another bar thread but an actual assistance thread.
*MODS: please dont move this to OT as the purpose of the thread is to prey off the experience and contacts of the NE* Thank you
Through my own personal experiences, personal knowledge of some close friends on this forum, and now even those who openly post up... it seems that there are at least a few people who have been hit by this economic down turn.
The idea of this thread is to offer up assistance, be it in the form of a referral for a job opening, business contacts and connections, a discounted service (say taxes, etc..) assistance with legal issues pertaining to job loss such as getting out of a lease or selling a vette, and/or for those who might be seeking employment, to post up.
So post up people... alot of us are affected by this and I KNOW that our own Vette family can help if not at least put a smile on each others faces.

You know Kim,
When I first met you, I thought you were pretty cool. Now I know for sure.
These are some pretty scary times for some members here, and all around our nation. I personally know two good friends who have lost their jobs due to this economy, and there are two more friends who are just waiting for the axe to fall. I am lucky so far that I'm still working, but after March 1, when my project is over, I'm not sure what is going to happen. We all have to stick together. Maybe, we can post up here our areas of expertise, and if we know of companies that might need someone with our talents.
After that, we should all see Sherm, and get blasted.Hey Sherm, we get Forum discounts. Right?
I posted in the OT Sticky, but I will reiterate it here. My company is hiring. I know we have positions open at our Long Island Office and possibly in our NYC office.
For those of you who have been hit by the current economic climate drop me a PM. My firm is always willing to talk to those who have the need, want and desire to succeed.
Were NJ based and just opened a location in Weschetser County.

Great idea Kim, for those of us that are unemployed, we really appreciate all of your help.
I guess it's time to share my sob story to everyone. For those that don't know, I was laid off from company in early January along with most of our IT Dept. I worked with the firm for 11 years, through ups and downs, mergers and acquisitions, we were able to weather all kinds of storms but this recession has hit the architectural field especially hard, our firm basically came to a standstill. My wife was also laid off back in November so it's made the situation even more dire. Suffice to say, it's been a very difficult time for us, both emotionally and financially. It's definitely given me a new perspective on things.
I would suggest that anyone that may suspect that the axe might be falling to quickly start polishing off their resumes and make sure you make a backup copy of all your contacts, your personal files, etc. If the axe falls, you may not have time to get all the personal info you might need.
For those that are unemployed, make sure you go to the Department of Labor site at http://www.labor.state.ny.us. You may be eligible for unemployment assistance which has been extended because of the extent of the economic downturn.
Alex and other IT related people, this is a good web site for IT jobs that i used in the past: http://www.dice.com/
Also, if you see a listing here http://www.comrise.com/
let me know and i can pass your resume directly to a recruiter, that is my current contracting company.

Thanks Stephen, pm me your email address and I'll send it to you. I really appreciate your help.
Dice.com is pretty good, I highly recommend that site as well.
I myself have been unemployed since 11/6/08. Things are running real close, and my luck as of recently has been taking an even faster turn towards the worse.
11/6: let go
11/8: lost my grand father
12/24: Hit a guardrail after losing control on an icy overpass(Merry xmas to me...right?)
and then I got my car back 2 days ago and someone hit it in a parking lot.
back on topic though, if anyone here happens to know of a company that pays hourly and is looking for a sales person please let me know, even though I am not to well known on these forums. I've got about 5 years of retail sales/customer support (CompUSA, Circuit City and working at an Airport in Wilmington)
I just cant seem to work for a company that stays open
Probably isnt the right place/time for this post but I figured I'd throw it out there. I've applied for about 30 jobs via monster.com and indeed.com but a majority of jobs I am interested in/have a background in all require some type of degree. (graduated high school in 06, was going to go to school this semester-Circuit City closing, and me being let go canceled that) I was also a computer tech for CompUSA for almost a year so I've got experience in that field. (with about 10 years of experience with the operating systems)
Wow!! I'm very sorry to hear my Corvette buddies are having such a hard time. The field I'm in is doing well through all of this and trust me working for Wal-Mart gives me piece of mind. I'm a licensed optician so if any of you want info about schooling let me know, there is a storage of licenses in the State of NJ. It's not a bad field and even though you can't get rich off of doing it, you will not starve and there is plenty of work out there.

Im really glad that this thread is taking off! Thank you to everyone for posting and sharing your personal stories. I was a little nervous to start it but hey... god helps people who helps themselves right? And desperate times call for new ideas.
So anyways..
I also wanted to mention another bit of resume advice... when applying through large websites like Monster... or directly through larger companies websites its important to remember to use the SAME key words in the job description on your resume. They use a filter to sort through and check for these items.
Also, if you upload or copy and paste a resume, do not use bullets, or hyphens to denote skills or accomplishments. The majority of the time these symbols are not recognized by the system and your resume gets discarded as though it was never sent! Good Luck everyone!!!

hey all, I own a pizza shop on the shoreline. I'm looking for weekend help right now. I'm sorry, but thats all I can offer. In the summer time we are off the wall, so again at that time I'll also be hiring for a couple of positions. good luck to everyone. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help.
Wow, this seems to have hit everywhere. As an afficianado of the unemployment system due to my many years in the carpenter's union, allow me to interject some advice. In NJ, you can file online at NJUIFILE.NET. They will send you info, and phone numbers to contact them, but the numbers are now useless. You will get put on hold for about half an hour, and then they will say that " we're too busy, call later". Later is never an option because they never answer. They are overwhelmed.File early, and print out your confirmation number. Save all you info just in case.NJ max benefit is a little over $500 a week. Look for any kind of work that you can do on the side for cash, and learn to cut back on everything. Splurge every once in a while just to keep your spirits up, and when you do, make sure you really take it all in, and enjoy. When it's like this, shelve your attitude, and your pride, and do whatever it takes to make some cash to get by.
BTW, I am a carpenter for over 30 years, and I know how to fix basically ANYTHING in your home.If you're really in a bind, need some advice, contact me.All my non-vette owning friends friends do it.I'm kind of like the This Old House Answer Man for them.

Sorry to hear of all this bad news.
I for one have seen the ups and downs of the yachting market. Even made it through the luxury tax years when Viking went down to 40 employees. We grew to over 1700 this past year but due to the recent economic downturn we were forced to layoff a mass amount of employees and are down to 400 people as of today as well as line reductions from 4 to 2. we usually build over 100 yachts a year, from 45' to 110' and have 4 new models a year but we have haulted new model research and development and will only produce one new model this year "a 76'" due out in October of 09. I had to cut my department down to 0.250% and even had to cut my secretary's hours. Its sad for any boss to do but in the end its for the good of the company and in an effort to keep the future in sight. when we do come out of this most of the people will get a call back but we will never produce the same amount of product we did in years past. From my eyes a quality product is better than a over produced product.
May everyone pull through this and my prayers are with those who have fallen on hard times. Keep your chins up and pray for a positive ending to all of this.
