rt 8, rt 30 rt 28 all in the dacks are great roads. rt 9n along lake george is also good if you dont get stuck by traffic. try cutting through the catskills on rt 145 which will take you to rt 30 outside amsterdam,ny.

You NEED to spend just one night up there. Check out forum member Al Armstrong's place at the base of Whiteface Mountain. http://www.mountainbrooklodge.com/
I'd take the northway up to North Hudson, turn off to take old Rt. 9 north to Jay, turn left towards Whiteface and stay there for the night. Al and Alicia have a great little place. It's very clean and inexpensive. They also have a campfire going out back with free beer. Honest. They always have a free light breakfast too. Tell them Tom the castle builder with the yellow C5 vert sent you. Al's got a red C5 and also gives discounts to retired and active duty service men and women.
The ride up Whiteface Mountain Memorial drive is a drive that is always worth it.
If you decide to do this I'll give you the directions to an incredible LLLONNNGGG stretch of twisting road that never has any traffic on it.

If you get up this far, this is a great place to stay too:

I know the owners very well.
