Just read that there is an abandoned runway in Calverton, seems that some guys are runnung their cars out there. Over 2 miles long and 150 feet wide. Could this be true?

Calverton
Sounds like the old Grumman Airfield. I know there is a skydiving school and a few other commercial buildings. This could be one of the sites that Long Islanders would like to have made into a drag strip, motor sports park. I thought it was patroled, I know I wouldn't want to be on the runway when a sky diving plane was taking off or landing.

Isn't this where Mowton wanted to take us last year after the BBQ but was unable to get permission??
BTW, here's a satellite view of the runway, its actually two runways. They're shaped like a big A. Its like they are calling out to me.

Its not abandoned
Calverton has two runways. The NW/SE one is not abandoned at all.The skydiving school as well as some of the businesses at the airport use it regularly so I wouldn't run there for risk of a serious calamity. The SW/NE runway is officially closed so the likelyhood of aircraft landing is slim but it is private property so you know the risks. One thing to consider about the whole place that I noticed while flying in there one day is the multitude of mutant/inbred deer that run around the place.Makes me think twice about speed in any vehicle at that place.Hopefully it becomes a motorsports facility with a road course, oval and drag strip that we so desperately need on an island all to quickly becoming the land of NO.

Alex, I was trying to get into Gabreski Airport as I know the Base Commander....
Francis S. Gabreski ANGB / Gabreski Field
Francis S. Gabreski Airport (ANGB) is located in Long Island (Westhampton Beach, Suffolk County), New York, approximately 80 miles east of New York City. It is home to the 106th Rescue Wing which operates HC-130 Hercules and MH-60G Black Hawk helicopters to provide war and peacetime aerial rescue services. The base encompasses 88 acres and contains 34 buildings; 32 Industrial and 2 Services, amounting to approximately 311,000 square feet. There is no family or transient housing. The day-to-day base population is approximately 250 personnel; however, one weekend each month the population surges to 826 in response to Air National Guard drills.

Does anyone know the guy that owns some propert adjacent to Calverton airport? Rumor, which is confirmed, has it that he was allowing people to run 1/8 miles on his own property, but warned that people were at their own risk if the proceeded onto public land.
