Damaged Corvettes will be Displayed Before Restoration
Evidently, we just can’t get enough of those Corvettes swallowed up by that sinkhole. The story has garnered so much attention that the National Corvette Museum has decided to display the cars before they are even restored. The museum has announced that the damaged Corvettes will be showcased at the facility from April through July […]

People are fascinated by seeing small pieces of the Titantic on display, why wouldn't people be interested in the sinkhole Corvettes?
Ultimately, the sinkhole event is now part of the history of those vehicles. Personally, I would be curious to see them...before and after. We are not rolling out grandma on a slab here, these are cars and the sink hole event has brought the museum quite a bit of attention.
Why not capitalize on it and raise funds for future events/displays?

Well, speaking with Wendell Strode, they still only can locate 6 of the 8 cars. I have a feeling that nothing will be able to be saved from the 2 they can't find (the 1.5 millionth, and the Mallet). Maybe those 2 will become a permanent display.

tourism side show w/American ingenuity at work
I'd go a step further. A major step further and keep the sinkhole. Turn the table on mother nature and develop it into a tourist attraction. It's already gotten worldwide free press. And it couldn't have happened in a better spot (since it did happen I better add). Perfect spot for the tourist draw. Right smack center. Then replicate the cars down in the hole with disposables.
A winner for NCM, BG, and the State of KY.
Hey, it will without doubt be a bonus for the Corvette plant production #'s as well as increased NCM deliveries of sparkling new C7's.

Keep them on display until GM is actually ready for the individual cars. I don't think GM will restore them all simultaneously, so until they need the next car, display them.

If I lived in Indiana still, I would go see them before the restoration, however, I am not driving across the country to do it. So I hope they have a section in the museum that documents the sink hole and the restoration with before and after pictures.

I read that the 1.5M Corvette and the Hammer Corvette may not be able to be retrieved...at this point they can not be located.

I have no doubt that even the last two cars can be rebuilt or "restored" as some people call it. But given the extensive damage to the vehicles, what are they really restoring? All they are doing is gathering a collection of parts that looks like the cars that used to be on display. What is going to be used from the original Hammer? The VIN tag and a wheel? I didn't see too much else that could be "restored".
Some of the cars that sat on top of the pile - by all means, clean them up, replace a part here and there and the non-original parts are just more of the vehicle's history. But if you are going to build a car from scratch, with 99% new parts, that's not really restoring anything. Not only is it not money well spent, but if 50% of the Corvette fans would like to see something be preserved to remember the event than one of those now useless twisted piles of parts would be the one to put under glass and leave "as is" for future generations to view as part of the NCM's history, as sad as it might be.
