As far as all the comments about regulars being banned - well maybe they shouldn't have engaged in behaviour that got them banned. It's pretty simple... Many of the people in question knew better and got warnings, maybe they need to take responsibility for their actions.
Go.
Sounds like a fun mission.
I won't be there this year because of work committments.
Go.
Since I can't sleep for some reason, I'd like to put my .02c in as the OP.
I started this thread to see who was coming to CI this year.
The thread has morphed into something more along the lines of, " why CI has been shrinking, and won't last much longer".
There are some facts that are without question, but for various reasons won't be discussed. Suffice to say that a number of CI regulars of the past won't be back, and their reasons are part of the problem.
Every year, the Bash gets tons of support from Chevy, NCM and others.
Being vastly better attended, I think it competes for our participation.
After all, if one has to drive a long distance, and take days off, it's hard to justify going to 2 events so close together. Without enthusiastic support and interest shown by discussions posted on the Forum, CI suffers. In years past, there was a lot more chatter leading up to CI, now not so much. There seems to be disillusionment with this event.
I'll just say this, and shut my pie hole for now; if attendance and attitudes slide any further, I probably will try the Bash next year.
I had 3 good reasons for coming this year.
1. A good friend was coming, and offered to bring me with him.
2. I have a mission to accomplish at the NCM this morning
3. The Wounded Warrior event tomorrow. I will do my part
I hope to have a good time this year with whoever shows up

My wife and I went to the Bash last month instead of coming to the CI this year. I made the decision today that I am coming to the CI with my six year old son. Even though it will be for only a day, it is a tradition that I have been doing the last 3 years, I know I will regret not going. I don't care how many people are there, I just enjoy talking with the people that are in attendance.

I'm already here! I participated in the Wounded Warriors event today and had a great time with John, the young man that I drove around for the day. We were escorted by the Kentucky State Police to and from Ft. Knox and ran at an average speed of 85 mph the entire way with more than a few sprints to close up ranks. My passenger was loving it!

I was alll set to go this year and I had to back out at the last minute due to work changing on me
I went last year, and there were probably maybe 20 vettes at most, and maybe 35 people at Hampton Inn, but we still had a good time. About 7 of us came from Chicago Area. I saw a handful of "regulars" and that was it. We still sat around in the parking lot and made our own little party.
I think attendance has dwindled for a lot of reasons, but I don't really blame NCM at all for any of it.
1- I still think the econnomy and all the flooding/weather this year has had an impact, and last year too. I know for me, I don't want to drive 6 hours to bowling green if they are forcasting a 60% chance of rain/t-storms for 2 or 3 days during the event. No fun to sit around in the rain.
2- simple word of mouth here onthe forum..I think a lot of people read threads like this and the others and see how few people post, and they just assume attendance will be low, and they don't go...when in fact there could be many people going that don't post up....maybe I am wrong but I get that feeling. I also know that locally people hang in groups, and if the "local" group is not going, not many will venture down on their own. Just a thought.
3- Roscoe BBQ - not blaming him for not being able to keep this up I know it was a TON of work and huge project to maintian, but I know a ton of people that really really enjoyed this
4- Drag racing- this is interesting because I noticed over the years that they struggled to get enough participants, However, the crowd to watch this was always a decent size. I know the TX crew really was into this and they brought big numbers.
5- C5/C6 Bash- I think people have started to go to this instead, I think we should combine the two events. You also have Bloomington Gold and Carlisle which a lot of people will just go to that if they want to attend a large Corvette event.
6- Regulars being banned...I can't really comment on..I noticed alot of them are not around any more, but don't really know details so I'll leave it at that
All in all, I would agree is about the Corvette brother/sisterhood... and the biggest attraction is being able to just hang out with friends and have a good time..whether that involves drinking or not...whatever I really enjoyed meeting people here on the forum that were not local to me that I would chat with here online.
I hope something can be done to salvage the event If not I guess I will start going to the C6 bash or whatever.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the reply and your great comments. I'll be forwarding those over to the Events Manager.
Unofficially, my opinion is that no matter what, we're all friends and our paths will cross somewhere along the line at some Museum event. Whether it's at the Bash, (where maybe club members could agree to meet again at some hotel to relive the glory days) or at a re-energized Cruise-In remains to be seen. Either way, I'll look forward to seeing you.
All of the comments here are appreciated, especially from those who see it from both sides.
All the best,
Bob 2.0

I have just arrived and unfortunately will only be attending the banquet tomorrow night and maybe a visit to see any of my old friends at the Hampton.
As one of the few that have been to every single one of the Cruise In's I have a lot of opinions, but not enough time or space to discuss it all.
Sadly, I can't offer any solutions to the problems either.

I'd rather see the CF Cruise In continue as it has in the past, we just need to get people interested for the right reasons.

Frank. Sorry I'm not going to see ya this year.
I hope we still have one next year. My girlfriend couldn't get out of work this year. I toyed with the idea of coming down today, but my full time job has been busy and I couldn't really leave either
Like you I have many theories also. The best part of the CI event was always the people to me. You can always go to a car show anywhere, but we were a great group that really got to know each other online and traveled across country. Many of the original regulars slowly left for various reasons. Unfortunately the "newbies" over the past few years never made the connection the core group did. And a lot of what others have said too. Your burnouts in the burnout contests back in the first few years are still legendary.
I hope this event can turn around. I've had many great memories there over the last few years. I hope we can somehow turn that around this year.

Mojo,
We were talking about you on Thursday wondering where you were at, glad to see you made it down safely.
As far as attending the CI's, since GM bought back the Lemon Z two years ago, I've still attended to meet up with old friends and support the museum. I didn't sign up this year but still went down to see some old friends and support the museum. One of these days I'll be back in a Corvette. I was going to tag along with a buddy of mine in his vette and leave the Caddy behind but decided to come home and take care of some needed work around the house.
Hope those who are attending have a good time.

Considering the OP subject went so far off- track, my comments:
A few years ago I posted thoughts on the last CI we (S/O and I) attended.
In this thread I have seen these same issues raised - they reflect a consensus of many Vette owners I've talked with regarding the reluctance to attend CI.
Basically the event (which I will define as the 'parking lot' as that is where the majority of time is really spent by the majority) became segregated/regionalism/cliquish.
The camaraderie encountered in earlier CI's was wonderful - did not matter what generation of Vette one drove, where one was visiting from, age, etc. - all we there to make friends, renew old friendships, have a good time with everyone (very few exceptions to this).
The last two we attended the parking lot venue changed to the degree we felt ourselves outsiders and not wanted if we intruded on others that were formed by local geographical groups (not bashing, but one was the Chicago group, another the Florida group - there were others including the split Texas groups; North and Houston).
Having experienced this one year we determined to not participate in the parking lot venue - we did stay at the Hampton but in the evenings we went 'out on the town, or in our room.
Further we decided to make our own event agenda and not take the 'group tours' - mostly because those were disjointed to the point the effort was not worth it. Instead we picked up in the morning, and with one or two other Vettes headed into the 'hills' with a destination in mind, but no set agenda (time at x, etc.). For the last two years we did that and were very pleased with the activities.
About three years ago we started to look at CI as a no longer fun event for us - and have thus avoided them.
We do miss many of the friends we made over the years, but most we miss the camaraderie between all vs the segregation that had become the norm.
We do NOT miss the immature actions of some (I.e., excessive drinking, 'smoke em up' tires displays, etc. etc.).
To those attending this years CI we wish you the best - stay safe and enjoy yourselves.

[quote]not bashing, but one was the Chicago group [quote ]
I am sorry you felt this way we always tryed to make any one and everyone feel welcome as far as groups staying together thats everyone at cruise in . the few times I sat down with to OT clan I felt like an outsider . as far as I know we never made anyone feel like they were not welcome at our tent . I will say our group got out of hand a few times but 6 times I went to cruise in there were others that acted the same way .

At the first Cruise In, we were all one happy family, that was 300 people. From another thread I saw we had as many as 580. Zconsidering the size of the forum, that isn't too many, but enough to cause some people to feel left out if they didn't know anyone.
This year with around 80 people, there were no parking lot events to speak of(But I'm only here for one day), but everyone got along just fine.
Did it suck that the door prizes for the banquet were for C5/C6 cars? For me yes since I can't use any of that stuff, but it didn't matter, we had more prizes than participants that the four me and the wife won were things that I could use, so I feel good about that. The dinner was awesome, best meal we ever had at a Cruise In, and I've been to all 12.
If the group stays small enough, we'll probably end up back at the same place for the banquet next year, and that's fine by me. But it would be nice to at least double the attendance for next year.
This year with around 80 people, there were no parking lot events to speak of(But I'm only here for one day), but everyone got along just fine.

I believe you are making my point - instead of the 'natural' congregation (as was occurring at the 'tree' in front of the Baymont) CI migrated to 'segregated' groups.
The 'out of hand' really escalated following CI 7 IMO.
I know there are several story's regarding why CI participants 'moved' away from the Baymont - however all of them I've hear are untruthful against the actual facts.
We were there (front desk) the night things 'blew up' (C5/C6 Bash and CI). The management of the Baymont was not only within his rights about addressing the situation, but as a business person responsible to more than accepting the drunken and outlandish actions that occurred.
If that were a single instance it could be put down to exuberance fostered by too much drinking - however it was one of hundreds.
One member of the Museum (to be unnamed) and I discussed the issues above at great length. Overall they were appalled at the degrading of acceptable (also read mature) conduct. From what I was told they did discuss this with CF management at some point.
The next year there were some 'regulation' of activities (I.e., precluding burn- out, etc.) however these were not enforceable - and as a result there was the Vette burn outs on the street that enters the hotel areas - and from one such episode a trailer was hit by a Vette.
I could go on and on - but the bottom line is the initial CI's were 'fun' gatherings - with minimal stupidity. As time went on CI became more of 'who could be the most stupid or outlandish' - and then bragging about in on the Forum. So the following year there were the inevitable 'lets top last years stupidity'.
BTW - the stupidity was not regulated to just young idiots - many were older idiots.
IMO, the situations have become a detriment to attendance, and the Forum needs to find solutions. JMO.
... as far as groups staying together thats everyone at cruise in . the few times I sat down with to OT clan I felt like an outsider . as far as I know we never made anyone feel like they were not welcome at our tent . I will say our group got out of hand a few times but 6 times I went to cruise in there were others that acted the same way .

Roscoe's cookin' was always the star attraction of the parking lot! Great to hear from ya buddy!
I'm sure it was intimidating sorta when you walk up on a group of 30-40 people who already know each other and are all chatting up a storm...but I know the Houston tents were always full of newcomers. Might have been our Thursday night Gumbo fest....or our longstanding *Free Jack Daniels* to everyone who *comes to TX* (our tents). The funny thing is there aren't a lot of Jack Daniels drinkers out there really so we never went broke giving it away. But when we brought the gas powered Binford 4000 Maragarita machine and started handing them out...mna...did we have a LOT of new friends! I have no idea how much ingedients we went through, but I know each night involved several store runs for supplies! It was great! Our internal unwritten rule was always that whoever was a *rider* and didn't bring their car was responsible to purchase the alcohol for the weekend as punishment! We even had *movie night* one year with a projector on a borrowed Hampton Inn sheet!
BTW- we have the secret to getting electrical power out in the front parking lot!! SShhhhh......
Again,,we hope we can get it all back going again. It was great to catch up with old friends and have fun. Heck we all came even when fuel was hitting $5 a gallon! You just do what you need to do.

Roscoe,
Jelena and I miss your cooking and friendship the most of all the 'lost' activities of CI.
The cooking you did for all, and your crews assistance in ensuring what you cooked was delivered did is one of the favorite memories we have.
I know that you were an integral part of the 'old' CI's - and that your efforts were immense in making these events memorable. Without those actions on your part the 'parking lot' would most likely have been for parking the Vettes, and nothing else.
As a note I usually gained weight at the CI's - and not, I repeat not from drinking the beer! Damn, started my mouth to watering just thinking about it.
Keep safe up there - and we do hope to run into you again.
