I think the valve cover gasket is the easiest gasket on the engine to replace. All you need is a wrench, some RTV and the gasket. Chicken is optional, beer is mandatory.
I'll have to give it a shot (and a beer). Some how-to book I read said the driver's side will test your patience with stuff that has to be removed. One shop said the right side takes about 1 hour while the left takes 4 hours. If I do it myself I might as well refinish the covers - they're looking pretty shabby. But, since I don't a lot of mechanic'ing, I always worry about taking something apart, not getting it back together right, and then having to sell it for parts on Ebay
You can sell anyting on eBay, so you will be able to get rid of it.
You could always take a picture or two of the stuff on the valve covers before you start. I am about to swap a carb manafold and valve covers on one of may cars, and I am going to try to draw a quick diagram of every thing. My problem is some things are already disconnected.

L98 C-4's can be a bioch.
Alt bracket in the way
WW motor in the way.
It's not just 4 centerbolts on each side and you're done.
Not really technical, just time consuming.

I have the older cast heads, so not the 4 center bolts, but the 4 perimeter bolts. I can see where it would be difficult, and not being mechanically sharp (or patient) adds up to going to a shop.
Count me in as well, if you need/want extra help. Just be warned, I'm slow, but I do poor work.
Thanks, Guys - I may take you up on the offer if I run into trouble. I thought I'd try to remove the covers and refinish them before reinstalling. There was an article in corvettemagazine.com on removing and refinishing. The paint on mine is flaking and bubbling - generally pretty shabby - and I didn't want to do the gaskets without improving the appearance. Yellow valve covers with yellow sparkplug wires might nice BTW - does anyone know where I can get the covers media/bead blasted in the Aurora area?

Rich let me talk to a buddy of mine he does small sand blasting jobs in his garage and I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem doing it for a beer
I will call him tonight

If that doesn't work, I have a small blasting cabinet in my garage. I will have to check to see if valve covers will fit in it.
Rich
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, my friend said he can sand blast your valve covers just let me know if you want it done and we'll make arrangements.

Hi Frank - Thank you for getting back to me on the bead blasting. I've had a problem with the car - it wouldn't start for the past 2 weeks. I finally got it going tonight, so hopefully, it's back up and running for a while. This past weekend I tried to start on the valve covers but discovered a big problem - there are 2 T-40 torx screws that attach the EGR pipe to the manifold. They are absolutely frozen tight in place and won't budge . The pipe, of course, sits in the worst possible spot - right over the cover. I tried WD, penetrating oil, hitting the screws with a hammer to loosen them, and let the engine run for a long while tonight hoping the heat would help. Right now I'm stuck. Getting those screws out will be my next projeect, but I need to do it without shearing off the heads. Hopefully, good news to follow soon -
If you need some help Rich let us know what we can do, but it sounds like you've tried just about everything..can you get a torch in there to try and heat it up? if so I have one if you don't
Frank
