"Big Boy" locomotive road trip
I guess this wasn't a good weekend to get the group together.
Road trip cancelled
when: Saturday Nov. 1st
where: Denver, CO to Cheyenne, WY
why: To see one of the eight remaining Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" steam locomotives.
starting point: Mtn View Garage
There were twentyfive 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" steam locomotives built before and during WWII, all operated by Union Pacific. These are considered to be the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built in the world. Only eight remain today.
#4004 is on outside display at Holliday Park in Cheyenne, WY. According to Yahoo Maps, it is 94 miles from MVG.
The drive up I-25 and visiting the engine shouldn't take too long. After finding someplace for lunch, we should have enough daylight to find more fun roads back to Denver.

Here's an old pic of #4006
That little thing to the left is a human.
Here is #4004 in action. (Makes a tree-hugger cry. )

Hey Eric
I might be able to go on this run. What time are you thinking of leaving at? I have 2 parties to go to Halloween night so I'll be sleeping a little late Saturday so let me know the details.

Nothing in stone yet. Depends on who wants to go, and what we want to do.
I was thinking about leaving Sean's awsome Mtn View Garage, by 10am. The drive up there shouldn't take more than 90 minutes. Then spend maybe about a half hour at the train, then some time for lunch. That should give us at least five hours of daylight for the ride back. Looking at the map, we could retrace some of our route from the Blue Mystery Run.
Or if Sunday Nov. 2nd would be better...?

So, yea there is one in Denver, but I feel like driving the Vette to go see another one.
It's American history!

Sounds like fun, however I have a couple of parties to go to on Saturday so I can not make the run that day... If this gets moved to a Sunday run, I should be able to make it work...
Will keep watching to see what you guys decide.

I start 18-wheeling for FedEx next week for the Christmas season. So I guess my weekends for the next three months are full.
I'll try suggesting this road trip again next spring.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!
I agree with Nelson, if the rest of your weekends are history, all the more reason to go one or both days this weekend.
If you go on Sunday, I am in
