I am thinking about driving from Gatlinburg TN to Jackson Hole WY in April or May...in my Vette. Any words of wisdom, caution, etc. from you knowlegable Westerners?

If you take I-70...The drive through Kansas is worse than watching paint dry..
Jackson Hole is an awesome place.. I actually like it better in the summer but it's fun year round..You'll enjoy!!

If you go north through Colorado to Wyoming and then go west on I-80 on the southern half of Wyoming (I'm going by memory on this but believe that is the highway) beware of cops and also that gas stations are sparse and closed at night's. Went that way once and had to wait over 2 hrs for a station to open up in the morning when I was in my truck pulling a trailer to Yellowstone Park.

In May, I am driving from Northern Colorado, Fort Collins to Gatlinburg TN. The comment is right on about Kansas and watching paint dry. I will be letting my wife drive thru that state while I nap. If you are coming in the spring, the troopers will be out in force. If stopped they won't even listen to you. Be careful. Burnt out lights are a biggy in this part of the country.
good luck

First, how much time do you have slated for this little trek?

Depending on how fast or slow you want to go along with site-seeing along the way; there is plenty.

I-80 is packed all the time...not just tractor trailers. I-70 is just like said previous...paint drying is invigorating after a trip on I-70 through Kansas and Eastern Colorado.

You are looking at just under 2,000 miles one way. Plan for May just in case of weather in Wyoming...we haven't had our winter storms yet as of today. We usually get snow in March and April.

Best thing is to get a map and plan for the scenic byways if you have time to meander. Otherwise, buy a Valentine 1 (if you don't already have one) and just cruise down the interstates as much as possible.

There is plenty to look at it just depends on what you like or would like to see.

Snow in April was one of the things I was concerned about so this is good feedback.

The wife and I expect to devote 2 weeks to this trip. We will probably try to make miles on the way to CO/WY and sightsee on the way back.

Hey, Jim, if you find yourself on I-70 in NE KS in need of a place to stay, we've got lots of guest space! It'd be nice to meet a fellow Forum "old timer!"

So far as Colorado and Wyoming go:
Maybe hit Colorado the first week and then Wyoming and back home.

Come into Southeast Colorado on your way to the Highway of Legends Colorado Byways . Then on to the Royal Gorge or Pikes Peak or both. More Colorado Byways Then take the scenic route around Denver. Then on into Estes Park, Steamboat Springs and Walden and on into Wyoming near Saratoga and Encampment.

There is plenty to see in and around Jackson. Come into Jackson from the south – Rock Springs, Wyoming (I-80 & Highway 191), if at night be wary of game crossing the road. If the road is not dry do not get on it…Oil field/Gas field trucks own that road all the way to Pinedale, Wyoming. Then the road has a wonderful view of the Wind River Range on your right until you drive right into the range on up into Jackson and the Tetons. Yellowstone is just north and all the park should be open in May. There is a Buffalo Bill museum in Cody, Wyoming (not far). On the way back you could go across the northern part of Wyoming and see the vast difference from the Southern part. Possibly, hit Devils Tower just north out of Moorcroft, Wyoming and maybe some or all of these places Wyoming Stuff More Wyoming Stuff. Then onto South Dakota and Mount Rushmore and back home.

I don’t know if you can fit all of that in two weeks but, that is a possible start. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
