I bought the car a few months ago and the hoses were off. So I don't know if it worked or not. The inlet and outlet were exposed, the car was outside with hood on.
I was able to turn lock to lock with car up in the air, very hard to turn all the way right. When I fired the engine it quickly went all the way back to the left, and want move.
The first thing that I would say is that the gear is the problem. However, if the system was operating correctly before replacing the pump and hoses, I would say that most likely the gear could not be the problem. For the most part, it must be air in the system. Jack up the front end and do not start the engine. Rotate the steering wheel full lock to full lock a couple dozen times. Check the fluid level in the pump reservoir during the lock to lock workout. Then start the engine and rotate full lock to full lock a few more times. The drop the car and lock to lock again. Go for a short drive. I would guess that things should operate correctly.
BTW, I would recommend that you fill the system with genuine GM power steering fluid.
