I got my T5 locally, you can check my restoration thread here : http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...long-post.html
I bought a broken trans for 200$ because I'm rebuilt it anyway. You can usually find one for 500-600$ non broken.
You'll need a world class transmission. To figure out what you're buying, ask for the serial number and look it up here http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/Bo...T5-ID-Tags.htm
13-52-066 is the serial number if the tailhousing, a lot a vendor do the mistake, ask for the real serial number.

I got a Camaro T5 locally, on the engine size it bolts directly but you'll have to fab a angled rear transmission mount. If you get a Mustang one, you'll have to make an adapter plate on the engine side, or get a pricey universal bellhousing that can match a SBC engine with a Ford transmission.

1500$ is for the complete swap, namely :
    -T5 transmission
    -rebuilt kit
-new gears to replace the broken one
    -Flywheel (plus resurfacing service)
    -clutch
    -pressure plate
    -pedal
    -Zbar (also name bellcrank)
    -Shortened driveshalft
    -short throw shifter
    -clutch linkage

There is several very interesting thread son the subject on Corvette Forum, and also on VetteMod.
If you got more specific question, just ask
