- when I was nineteen I got a 1961 vette with metallic brakes, fast steering, heavy duty suspension, retro fitted with a 365 hp, 327 shortblock and "double hump" 2.02 heads, duntov "30/30" cam, and muncie close ratio 4 spd with a hurst shifter. It was hot, very fast and loud and even at 19 not all that comfortable on long trips. Nearby Nevada didn't have a speed limit and was a quick blast away over Donner pass; highway 1 was just as close in the opposite direction and a largely deserted Central V
