I really think, based on the pic,that your posts are fine. I really doubt that any amount of clamping is going to draw that wood together,seriously! No rot,no worry. Putty,sand,prime,paint,done. Good luck. Bill

Thanks for the pics. After seeing that I'm not so sure that you need anything more than some wood filler. What I mean is, those columns are pretty old and as long as the cracks are no bigger than 1/8" and there is no splintered breaking or rot, the column in that pic is just a little dry and shrunken. Get a good exterior wood filler (paint store, home store) and go to town. If you have more ?'s I will be happy to elaborate further.
