I bought a 1999 C5 Coupe with 84K miles on it last year after searching quite a while to find one that I could afford and had a lot of the features I wanted.
Having worked on cars all my life I figured that I could fix things myself and purchased a shop service manual (3 volume) and started going about looking it over very closely and itemizing things that need attention. So here goes:
The telescoping steering wheel wont telescope in or out - at least not consistently - i frequently have to click it 5 or six times and then it moves and sometimes it doesnt move at all. A Chevy dealer looked at it and told me that after checking the switch and the motor they were OK and that it needed an new seat module that costs $400 for the part and another $100 to replace it. I didnt go for it, I found a used one for $99 on ebay and replaced it with no changes. All other memory functions work - just not the steering wheel. The diagnostics in the service manual lead to the same conclusion - its the seat memory module. Any body got any other suggestions?
Another issue that cropped up after sitting in the garage last winter was that the hatch in the back wont stay up on its own. If I replace just the shocks for the rear hatch will that fix it? There does not seem to be any other spring mechanisms in the hinges so I guess I need just shocks. Anybody else out there have a similar issue that was solved?
I love the car and I am fixing it up a little at a time. It is good as a driver - plenty of imperfections but still looks and drives beautifully. I have other issues but these are the ones I want to get fixed first.
Any expertise out there is appreciated - I also new to this forum and it looks great. So much info a guy could get lost in here.
