Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta, 46, was transported to Old Bridge Township Hospital where he was pronounced dead from multiple injuries suffered after his car went out of control and crashed in the fourth and final round of qualifying Saturday at the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals.
A very sad loss and day for racing & the NHRA. Our thoughts & prayers to his family and fans
The accident didn't appeared that he lost control. But more like the engine blew (maybe causing some brake & chute damage), and hit the concrete stop barrier at 300 MPH.
That track maybe should think about making a longer run-off for these modern day dragster & funny cars.
TRAGIC LOSS for the racing world Horrible way to go. RIP Scott!
I dont think that way at all, He blacked out when the motor let go there for not knowing anything after that. I would say when its time to go why not go when drag racing rather than a slow death in a hospital bed being feed with meds all day looking at the ceiling.
If those youtube vids are of the crash, I think you should remove them.
You watching the man die for Christ's sake.
If people want to have morbid curiousty about watch someome literally disintergrate, let them hunt for it.
My .02
If you are that curious as to watch someone loose their life, why not watch a scary movie there is plenty of that in there. But this man was a legend and what happened was truly a great loss. I don't think his family or anyone's family for that matter would appreciate it.

Raceway Park can't make the runoff longer because Pension Road is just on the other side of the concrete barrier the Funny Car hit. Besides they have almost a half-mile of runoff already which is obviously enough for these modern cars or the NHRA would not allow them to compete there.

I believe they should re calculate that, in the event the driver loses consiousness. They couldnt have done anything at that track though.

This is a problem that is common to MANY tracks across the US, both drag facilities and oval courses. They were once "out in the country" but developers have scooped up the land all around them, and civilization has moved in with roads, houses, malls, etc, and the racing facilities are being "squeezed".
I agree that at the current speeds the fuelers and funnies are hitting, maybe more shut down would be safer, but in many cases, the real estate just isn't available, and the tracks are fighting just for survival.

How about a heavy gravel area at the end of the track........
There is a gravel runout but by watching you see the chutes melted, and it appears that no brake was ever applied, I am guessing from his injuries or loss of conciousness prior to the final crash. At 300 mph he blew right through the gravel. I have been watching drag racing for about 35 yrs., and I never saw a car blow up into a mushroom cloud.
I will agree with others that most racers would prefer to go that way....
