Default Why am I having so much trouble logging in?

Title mostly covers it. Also having trouble staying logged in. Trouble started several weeks ago. Ideas appreciated.

The forum did have some problems about 2 weeks ago. Most folks who had problems could not look at all the menus when using the option in the red line.

Just as a first suggestion, delete all of your browser's cache before you log in again. Might not hurt to also delete all cookies.

If you're still having problems, tell us what browser you're using and what programs you installed on you computer since the last time things worked correctly.

Trouble staying logged in is almost always a local issue to you. It's most likely your browser's cookie for this forum is corrupt. This is not uncommon to occur for any website.

The best method is to singly delete the CF cookies. I do not recommend to delete ALL cookies because then you will lose all automatic logins and other preferences for all other sites you visit. There's just no need to go through all of that. How you singly delete the CF cookie depends on the browser you use.

If the above does not work, then it's likely you have a 3rd party software that may be interfering with the cookie.

I would try deleting the CF cookies, first.

Thanks for response.

I delete cache and cookies a couple of times per week ... no direct help ... although I think you're on to something. I appear to do better when I check the "Remember me" square upon log-in attempt. I've never needed to do that before in 8 years on the forum. Using Vista Ultimate and IE8. No new programs that I can recall.

You must use the Remember Me if you want to be automatically logged back in when you return after 1)You close your browser or 2)the cookie timeout has expired. The cookie timeout is a setting that the vBulletin forum uses to determine at what point an active user is no longer browsing the forum.

If you do not check the Remember Me option, you will need to enter your username and password if you close your browser or if you return to the forums after the cookie timeout passes from your last visit (I don't have the exact figure, but it's ~20+ minutes).

Unless you were using IE's save passwords feature?

Solution is simple enough:

If I check the Remember Me box, I can log in. If I do not check this box, I cannot log in.

Whatever, I suppose.

That actually is the intended function.

When you select Remember Me, you're given a cookie and you will be remembered even if you close your browser (as long as you don't automatically delete cookies), or if become inactive after the "cookie timeout" as defined by the forum (generally 15-20 minutes). The "cookie timeout" is used to determine when a user is no longer active on the forum and is used as a point of reference to change all previous unread posts to read status.

If you don't select Remember Me, you are given a session (think temporary pass) which will only remain valid as long as the browser is open and as long as you remain active and don't go inactive long enough to trigger the "cookie timeout" (approximately 15-20 minutes). If you do, you're considered finished with the site and you lose your auto login. This feature is there for users who share computers (such as public accessible computers).
