I probably can't help you resolve this but maybe. No, members can't delete posts. You can delete the text of a post you made but no one else can delete your stuff but you can't delete the post itself. If you deleted the text, your user name and avatar would still appear but with a blank text field. Does that help?

What was the title the thread you posted to and what Forum?

Yes, users can delete their own posts, though there is probably some restrictions on it.

In addition, due to the way the system is threaded, if a user deleted their post, and it happened to be a thread starter, it would take the entire thread and all replies with it. However, I do not believe a thread starter can delete their own posts.

It is possible a moderator moved or deleted the thread.

A user cannot delete their first post if it starts a thread. Only a moderator or administrator can move threads or delete other users' posts.

Okay, are you saying something different than what I said or just saying the same thing I said but in a different way? I'm confused, which is not uncommon.

You had mentioned that users cannot delete their own posts itself. Users can in fact delete (some of) their own posts. You can delete either post you made in this thread as a test . I do not believe a user can delete their own post if it's the first post in a thread (topic starter/creator).

However, users cannot delete posts made by other users, unless that user happens to be an Administrator, Moderator or other staff member that has privileges above normal users. You did mention this and that I was not disagreeing with.

The only way to know for sure what happened here is to have an Administrator or Moderator find the post in question to see what happened.

You can delete your post IF no one else has replied.

Thats it....otherwise you can delete the text but not the whole post.

As to the OP's problem...perhaps it was moved and not deleted. I will look

I once tried it as a test post in the Testing forum and it would not let me delete the post that started the thread, even though no one else had posted to it.

It's been several months ago, so maybe things have changed since then.

Maybe I just have fewer capabilities on the forum than others.

There is more to it than that. At the time of these posts in this thread, it was not made known if the person in question was the topic creator or simply responding to an existing thread. I (attempted) to describe the difference between a reply and a thread creator and the permission differences likely existing. I was a bit loose with my wording because vBulletin has a lot of permission levels and customization. It's possible there are a few forums here on CF that aren't consistently set, permission wise, and thus a user can delete their posts (a reply post) in one forum while being unable to do so in another forum. That might explain why Jim cannot delete a post in the Testing forum, as he stated and why there appears to be some mismatched results.

I was able to completely remove a past post I made in the Classifieds. Not just delete the content, but I had a "Delete" button and it deleted just fine. I was also not the thread creator. And I was one of several replies in the thread.

In addition, I have the option to remove a post I made in this thread:

I don't mean to nitpick here, but you first had stated that "you can't delete the post itself", and that was why I replied the way I did:

Of course, this could all have been a misunderstanding between topic creator, and responder. Which I attempted to address from the start as they do have different permissions and the outcome/answer is different!

I should have been a little more explicit. I can delete posts that I make in threads in 3 or 4 different forums. The only post of mine that I could not delete was the post that created a new thread in the Testing forum. I'm pretty sure I could have deleted the content of that post, but I think the title would still have remained.

Jim, the permissions in vBulletin can be quite hairy, especially if it's Custom permissions per forum per usergroup, rather than using the default permissions per usergroup for each forum. From what you describe, it does sound to me that a few forums may not be consistently setup, permission wise, and hence why there is some different results, experience and answers given. Of course, as you said, it could also be things have been fixed since your last findings.

an individual post yes...a thread no if there are replies and just because you delete it doesn't mean it is gone

Thank You

All I did was ask a question about the product for sale. Since the product overrides a safety feature in the car I just asked it that was a good idea?
