Default Use of tail light blackout kits in northern IL/SE WI

What's the official word in IL/SE WI on use of tail light blackout kits? How often can I expect to get stopped by local LEOs for having them? I drive in the northern burbs mostly, with an occasional trip into SE WI and the Chicagoland area on the weekends.

"as to throw a red light visible for at least 500 feet in the reverse direction".

"a stop lamp or lamps on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red or amber light visible from a distance of not less than 500 feet to the rear in normal sunlight"

Based on that info, a lighter tint kit may work better. As long as the "RED" is visible when the tail lights are on, I think it will be ok. Anyone else here currently have blackouts installed on their tail lights?

Just as those who decide not to run a front license plate you run the risk of being pulled over wherever and whenever. This is also what we term a “gateway” ticket, loud exhaust, etc..

I’m not telling you what you should do, I know how strong the lure of having a “bad azz” car is. There is the possibility you are giving an insurance company a settlement payout bargaining chip in the event you are rear-ended.

FYI

Best of luck.

I ran many years on my c5 with tinted tail and front turn signals , never once stopped also never ran a front plate . but the last few years of ownership I pulled them off and was running a front plate . just thought my luck was going to run out ! why give them a reason to stop me and give me a ticket for too loud of exhaust . if and when I am back in a vette I most likely will run them again .
