Default New to WI, anyone not run a front plate?

Hi all,

I recently moved to Milwaukee from Los Angeles and previously I never ran a front plate. I was just wondering what people think the likelihood of getting a ticket is here and how much they are.

I haven't run one for almost twenty years now. I did get stopped about it once when I was a kid but that was in a small town (and almost twenty years ago). Milwaukee is to busy for BS like that. Last I knew you get a warning ticket that you correct the problem and have an officer sign it. Then you mail it in and don't get a regular ticket.

I remember reading that Milwaukee gave out 14,675 (IIRC) speeding tickets for a year and only 7 were for under 15 MPH over!

I'm always amazed at people driving 60-65 in a 65 around here after driving in Milwaukee for so many years.

Welcome to our great state? I haven't run one on my 06' for 4 years and have never had any problem. My neighbor is a LEO and has explained to me that as long as you adbid be the local driving laws, you probably will never get pulled over and questioned about the plate.

Look forward to seeing you on our cruises.

Mike

over 100 bucks, not worth it IMO. Anyone not running a plate because they think their car looks "cooler" is just vain. These are the people that can not walk by a mirror without looking to see how cool they look. It's the law here , plain and simple. It will change soon enough but until then well,,,,,,welcome to WI

Welcome, I to have not run a plate in the year that I have owned mine. I am not sure what the status is but I believe they were actually trying to make it legal to run only the rear plate. It was on the budget to get changed and cut some cost. I recall that if it was adopted it would go into affect in July 2010. I have not checked any more on it.

With my luck, I'd get pulled over leaving my driveway the moment I remove the front plate.
Just the kind of luck I have. (Remember Joe Blffskluttflll from Lil' Abner. The guy with the black cloud alway following him? Yeah, that's me)

And, BTW, I grew up in Milwaukee, and cops never were too busy to pull me over (blue and green lights - against the law - only headlights and amber on the front, red, amber and white back-up on the rear, tinted windows, tire width exceeding the fender flares, etc etc etc)

In essance, as stated above, you'll get a faulty equipment citation, which means you have 10 days (I think) to correct the problem.
You can have any LEO sign the citation stating the problem was corrected, and either mail it in, or turn it in to the police dept. of the issuing officer.

OH, BTW, Welcome.
You should enjoy the upcoming seasonal change.

Front plates are required in WI on all vehicles. The fine is 126.80 and zero points. Most officers will give you a repair notice for not having a front plate. Most repair notices are returned in 5 to 10 business days and need to be signed off by any officer in the state and returned to the department that issued the repair notice. Repair notice do not go on your driving record.

I have issued the citation for failure to display a front plate but that was only on two occassions. One where I had given the guy 3 warnings to put a front plate on the car and the other guy was just being an obxoxious jerk and wouldn't quit swearing at me so a citation shut him up.

Front license plates are still required in WI. They tried to pass it where we only had to run rear plates but that portion of the law was shot down, so yes you still need a front plate to be in compliance with state traffic laws.

I am just over the border in Illinois. I have not had my front plate on for about 6 months, and nothing was noted about it. But I finally put it on, as I felt I was pushing it. I have one of the removable plate set-ups, and it's easy to either remove it or put it back.

My daughter lives in the city (Chicago) and had someone rip off the front plate, mount and all. She went to get a replacement plate, but has gotten FOUR tickets in the meanwhile, one while actually showing the temp on the front! She has managed to get them all set aside, but it's simply a pain in the keester. So things vary according to where you are.

i haven't had a front plate on my cars in nearly ten years. the key is not to draw attention to your self.

also. a good thing to keep in mind. the country 2 lanes here are 55mph unlike the 65 mph you guys had in cali. i wish it was 65...

Thanks for all the responses and welcomes guys! Wow, over $100 bucks if they do get you for it I was just looking at the DMV site and it seems the way they charge, no violation is less than $130!

Well I'm going to go get emissions inspected tomorrow. I'll probably throw the plate on the front for that (assuming I can find where I packed away the mounting hardware). I'm going to be putting away the vette for the winter soon anyway. I'll see how lucky I'm feeling come spring time

I won't be putting a front plate on my vette either, but I don't have one on any of my cars. I do keep the extra plate in the car, and normally mess it up a bit and then if I'm asked, I'll state that the car wash ripped it off and I haven't had time to repair it. Most cops will be cool about it if you aren't harrassing them.

I run my front plate, one less thing not to get pulled over for. I got the custom painted frame and it looks stock.
