Default Best route EVER to Starved Rock!

I have been going to Starved Rock for, maybe, 20 years. I have always taken rt.6 from I55 to Ottowa.

This year I have deceided I would see if I could find another , more twisty, more beautiful, way to the Rock.
It took all summer, but I found it!

Route 6 is a beautiful, wide open, safe, ordinary route.
My new route is better!

CAUTION! This route is made up of small two lane roads that have sharp turns, unexpected elevation changes and blind corners. Care should be taken because it is FAR more dangerous than Rt. 6!

It begins when you pick up Rt. 6 leaving Interstate 55 near Channahon.
Drive west over the Du Page river to a small side street about 3 miles west of 55. Turn south (left) on Bell Road.
Drive past the park on the right to Hansell Rd. Turn right and the fun begins....
The first time you need to take the route slow to familiarize yourself.
Proceed south west bound on Hansell until it comes to a "T" intersection. Take the left fork ( East Cemetary Rd.) .
Follow the road past the horse farms and around the old cemetary into Morris. The road will end after crossing under the Rt. 47 bridge (parallel to Rt. 47) at BENTON St. It is a "T" intersection. Turn right on Benton one block to Liberty St. It's the main street in Morris. Turn left on Liberty until you get to Jefferson St. Turn Right on Jefferson. Take Jefferson through this old beautiful town to the west side of town, (it becomes Freemont St.).
Turn left on Ottawa St. (you really cannot go any further on Freemont as it goes into a subdivision).
Follow the curve around to OLD STAGE RD. Turn (bend ) right.
Follow old stage rd. for several miles, until you get to Senica. The road becomes Union St. Follow it until you get to Main St. (Rt. 70). Turn south (left) and cross the river. IMMEDIATELY after crossing the bridge, turn right at the first road. There will be a sign pointing both ways to "Marinas". Turn right. Follow that road into Ottowa. There will be a Kroeger Food Store on your left. Turn right on RT. 23 and head up towards OTTAWA. Just before you get to the bridge you will find Rt. 71 on your left to Starved Rock!

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Rt6 to Starved Rock is the better part of an hour. Drive out slow and enjoy the colors. Then drive home on 88....

ZOOOM - Took your route today and it was very nice.
Only had two problems. 1. At the end of your route, Rt 73
is really Rt 71. 2. Why didn't you tell me that on the way back
I was going to be stopped by a trooper for not having a front plate.
He let me off with a warning but I didn't tell him I'm still not going
to put one on.
Anyway it was a great day - Thanks!

I've followed this route for many years. It's quite popular with bikers.

I tried this route today and it was awesome. Be careful because some of the road does have the tar and stone chip pavement. There was no traffic at all and I could not find that trooper writing warning tickets for no front plates. Nice drive with temps in the 70's.

Plans are in place to redo Old Stage Road that is West of Morris that runs along the Old Canal and traffic will not be able to go West on Old Stage Road. Date for this I do not know But should happen this summer?

A good detour for Old Stage Rd construction: continue south from Morris to DuPont Rd (couple of miles south of the river). Turn right, continue west thru the old DuPont Plant (signs state "Travel at your own risk"). After the plant, keep going west and you will end up going under the new Seneca bridge (there is a temporary stop light for the construction, this is Rt 170). Go straight thru the intersection and follow the directions as stated above to Ottawa. This route is not as scenic, but is a good alternative for those who want to stay off of I-80. Two words of caution, watch out for the deer that cross DuPont Rd, and watch your speed - Grundy county likes to patrol that stretch of road.

I took this ride yesterday, thanks for sharing the route, my wife and I really enjoyed it. Cementary Road is closed for about a 4 mile stretch but it was pretty easy to get around it. I will post some pics once I get them uploaded.

By the way my name is Nick and this is my first vette, so this is all new to me. I have a 2010 GS Black.

Thanks again.
