Is there a day before the Indy 500 that you can take your car out on the track ? It seems like it was called the Mayor's Run or something like that or some type of media or promo event. Anyone know ?

I think so but I don't have any details.
FYI - All track laps are strictly limited to 35MPH. I've been on the track for two different events and it was the same both times.
The only good thing is you get plenty of time to sightsee and take pics.
Kentucky Motor Speedway holds a "Drive the Track" day sometime in April where you get five laps behind a pace vehicle in small groups (5 cars) with speeds averaging 85 MPH (I was able to hang back and hit 125 MPH down the backstretch a couple of years ago)

We did this last May. There were hundreds of Vettes in police caravans from all around the loop. It was truly an awesome day. I'll see if I can find a pick of all the cars in line on the interstate. We almost stopped traffic on 465 from all the gawking. I think it is in the works again for this year.

Kentucky Motor Speedway is holding their annual "Drive the Track" day on Saturday, April 19. All you have to do is spend $40 in their gift shop. Check out the link below:

If there is an event for vettes I would love to attend and bring my father in law. He is on his last leg and has been to the 500 53 consecutive years. He would love taking a lap around Foyts playground.

It would be great to set up a Corvette day at the track, anyone have that kind of connections ?

I did this a few years ago with the Mustang club back when I had my 2000 GT. I would love to do it again in my new Vette! I do remember that they were VERY strict on the speed limit while you where on the track and they did have some people taking pictures at the start finish line. I have a pretty cool pic of the GT and one of the Vette would look even better.

I did the Mayor's Breakfast three years ago. The ticket included a lap around the track in my Vette. I posted the pics then, but here are a few more. I was alone in the car, so the pics aren't the best quality. It's a day to remember when you can get your own Vette on and across the Yard of Bricks.

yes Colonel, I agree.... anytime you can be on that track is amazing.
I interned with a TV station back in the late 90's, and the station that I worked at was then owned by the Hulmans. It was great, we had access to anywhere we wanted. Hot pit passes on race day, the garages throughout the month...(it was during the 97 Brickyard 400) press conferences...ANYWHERE...
The coolest day by far was when the guy that I was interning with had an interview with the dude that was driving/in charge of the pace car that year. I don't remember his name that was that was driving that year, but I think the car was a Monte Carlo. Anyway, it was me, the "Talent" and our camera guy. As we started to get in the car, the "Talent" (dude who I was doing my internship/interviewer who will remain unnamed, but if you follow motorsports is a houshold name) (unnamed because he is a d......uhhh he has a big ego)....anyway, he says, "sorry, not enough room". I was stunned. I had been looking forward to this day all month and then I got shut down. So a few minutes go by and they get back and get out of the car and both the "Talent" and camera guy have this look on their face like it was the first time they had ever ridden in a roller coaster. I was sooooooooo pissed. Then the driver then said to the dude I was doing my internship with "I have a few minutes left still, let me go ahead and tke him for a ride". Before my guy said ok, I was buckling up the 5 point harness. We were the only ones on the track at that time and he definately was having some fun out there. Lets say that there is nothing like going into one of those corners at speed. ever since then, I have had a new appreciation for those that get to drive on that track.
Sorry to ramble on, but I love reliving that story any chance I get....

Dad may remember this story better than I do, but *years* ago, they weren't so strict about speeds on the 'Yard of Bricks.' I'd guess it was 25 years ago, there used to be a huge swap meet covering most of the track infield. I remember at one of the events they allowed the SuperBirds out on the track. The sight of them coming around the banked turns is permanently etched in my mind. Something about those winged beasts coming around two abreast was a sight to behold.
They also used to let the Corvettes go out there. An old friend of Dad's spoke of running his '66 pretty hard around the track during one of those 'open days.' It wasn't until 4 or 5 years later that he received a letter from the IMS that had obviously been lost for several years. It said something to the effect, "We are well aware of how fast you were going around the oval..... You aren't welcome to tour the track again."
It's truly hard to believe how much things have changed in such a short period!
