Who here has been to Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI.? I am planning a family vacation/camping trip for the Generac 500 ALMS race on August 9th so me and my family can enjoy some Corvette racing. I was wondering if anyone would have some insight as to excellent areas of the track to be seated. Will there be a Corvette corral there? I have a map of the track printed and I’m studying it, I want to this to be an awesome trip. Any other cool stuff to know about that track???
So far I have reservations at the Westward Ho Camp Resort in Glenbeulah. It seems like a great family resort camp ground.
I know it’s early but I’m a planner so any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.
the kettle moraine corvette club maintains a permanant corvette coral located at turn 3 near gate 4. chevy sets up their hospitality tent within the corral. the campground is directly west from the track about 1 mile away.
there are many vantage points that are excellent so it is hard to choose just one.
I live 15 minutes from the track and attend most races. Corvette corral is located at turn three. Not the best place to see the race from but definately everything around there is Corvette related. Hospitality tent, free stuff, guest speakers, dealer and factory displays. Visit Road Americas website for track maps, lodging etc etc. find lodging early if you plan to stay in the area. This weekend fills up fast. Here are some pics from last year.

I stayed at the track last year for the whole weekend. Turn 14. I was told turn 8-9 is the action seats. I was at the 8-9 turn camp area for a little get together into the morning hours and it was a great time. The neighbors we had in turn 14 were great as well. I will be there again this year. Several of the chicago guys were present for the race saturday and hung out at the coach for a little bar bq.
Here are some links to some post: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1783513
Top of the Hill on the inside of turn 5 is a great place to watch the track and an easy walk to other great vantage points.
There is a Plymouth Rock camp ground across from the main gate. Clean grounds, hot showers and a swimming pool.
If you are staying for the weekend you may want to take your kids to the Public Beach at Elk Hart Lake after the race on Sat.
Location: Elmhurst, IL (West Suburb of Chicago) & Home of MEGA Horsepower
I've driven my Z06 at Road Amercia (pre-blower days) about 3.0 years ago and needless to say I don't think I could of had more fun in my vette with my pants on!
Fantastic track and area in general, and for those who want to take their vette sometime in their lifetime on a Road Race Track (where it belongs), Road America is A #1 in my humble opinion!

I'd agree, it is a really great track, but speed gets terminal there and I've seen guys write off thier car in the kink. Be careful... it's fast.
(This is a track where you USE 5th gear)

RA is a great track, I have had the pleasure of running my R1 on this track..... I go to the AMA races almost every year but I have missed it a few times (a few friend have gotten married over the last few years on the day of the races.... can you imagine the nerve ). There are many great places to view from, I love sitting at turn 1 and watching the cars/bikes come into the turn after the long straight I would recommend moving around and checking out the race from a few different points on the track

Add another to the list, it was the fastest, most incredible track I've been on so far. And yes, you may have to change your undies the first time you go out there.

^^ All fell victim that day, two of them in the kink I believe.
Driven HPDE's there twice a year every year 1999-2006. 2007 was the first season I missed be we made it for the ALMS race. It's a great track to drive or to spectate.
When I go to Road America to watch the Champ cars, I like to watch the first couple of laps from the woods just before they brake for turn five. There is a trail from the paddock area. You will be only about thirty feet away from the track, so you get a good sense of how fast they are really going. Just try to read the numbers on the cars! Gives me goosebumps every time.

I lived a couple miles away from the track when I was in high school. This is one of the best areas to watch, and it's a good "middle point" where you can set up shop and walk to any other area of the track. This is as far in as you can drive too.
I camped for this weekend a few years back, and I must say it was probably one of the greatest weekends in my life. I stayed near the upper paddock area, between turns 1 and 2 on the inside of the track. It was amazing, no big parties that kept you up all night, but enough to do that you weren't bored all night either.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend camping for this weekend to ANYONE, no matter if they have young ones or not.
I attend a number of races every year at RA and have also done some HPDE evenest there as well.
T3, Corvette Corral is a great place to park with food handy. Just a PITA to walk to anyplace from there. I do like standing on the outside of the track coming into T5 or at the very bottom of T5.
Good roads/highways to the track, good parking, a great and beautiful area with a lot of automotive history.
