This past Sunday, I got a "fix-it" ticket for window tinting that is too dark (20% which is nice to my eyes). So, I'm wondering if there is an optometrist/ophthalmologist in Columbus, OH area who can give me a waiver/note so I can keep the window tint. It helps.
I wonder if that would work if you got pulled over. My wife is legally blind and the sun mid day will give her a massive headache from what little she sees. I have not tinted yet but would like to for her so we can enjoy more rides.

I talked to my police buddy. He told me only the back window is legal. By tinitng the side windows it would give the police any reason to stop you just for that. Even with a note here in Illinois it is still illegal.
Wow, last thing I knew, you could tint all the way around in Ohio and even use Chrome tint. I guess things have changed or I was miss informed.
In Michigan, back window can be limo tint, and officer must be able to see your outline through the tint on side windows. My husband and I always had tinted windows. Never had any problems with the tinting, just the speeding.

Its legal to have sides tinted with a doctors note.
- Windshield is a no-no except for the top strip.
- Front side windows must be 50% or lighter.
- The rest you can paint black and they don't care.
To james6290:
The 20% front sides are on my M3. My Z06 has 35% on sides, 20% rear and 5% for the windshield strip. I never got pulled over in the Z06 due to tint, so I thought I would try my luck when I got my M3 coupe (20% all around except windshield).

You have to have a doctor diagnose you with a condition that warrants heavy window tint. You could get one to fudge that for you, but they had better be a really close friend because that's a serious no-no as far as Doctor ethics goes.
It's not legal even with a note - it's just an affirmative defense. That means you can still be cited into court. You would just produce your note, and it would probably be dismissed. Most LEOs wouldn't cite you with a legitimate note though.
Like I said, good luck getting the note!
Also, read the ORC. It doesn't specify a percentage. That's a guideline in the administrative code. If I remember correctly, it says that the occupant(s) of the vehicle have to be recognizable (or some wording like that) through the glass.
Here in Kettering OH they pulled my wife over in our Buick for having window tint too dark. I believe it is a 40, according to his meter and it should have been 50.
Good thing he pulled her over otherwise he may have interrupted the B&E going on 2 blocks away.

You're right. There shouldn't be any traffic enforcement anywhere. People would be much safer then.
BTW, the tint laws are there to protect LEOs from being harmed on traffic stops by not being able to see what the occupants are doing - not to simply screw with people (not like you'd care anyway).

Not true. In Michigan any front windows may only be tinted on the upper 4" of the window. Any more that that is not legal. Any windows behind the driver (rear doors, quarter windows, backlight) can be as dark as you want.

According to the Internaional Window Film Association, Illinois and Ohio does permit the front side windows to be tinted for medical reasons. Click the following link to Gila Film Products and then click the US or Canadian Tint laws button. It will eventually redirect you to the IWFA. http://www.gilafilms.com/Automotive/...-tint-laws.htm
