Default "Under The Arm................PITT"

That's the unofficial cheer of the University of Pittsburgh. My wife and I are both PITT grads. We were actually married on campus at Heinz Chapel in 1969.

What a great day of college football. Last night, PITT dumped 3rd. ranked and previously undefeated Virginia Tech....by a score of 28---21, AT Virginia Tech. GREAT game.

I was also ecstatic that Boston College dumped Notre Dame....also previously undefeated.

Now, if the Ravens (Rat-Birds to Uncle George) can upset Atlanta, and Mark Martin wins the Winston Cup race at Rockingham, my weekend will be complete. :)

All of the Corvettes are running....no projects to be done....I plan to be a couch potato for the remainder of the weekend.

Here I sit in the Pittsburgh area, saw PSU win and then turned on the Pitt game. I watched them come from behind and tie it up. THEN I got tired and turned off the TV because we all knew that there wasn't any way that Pitt was going to beat VT. What a great day.

Gary

Chuck--I too am a Pitt grad. My license plate is a Blue and Gold California tag reading PITT 71. Not only did Pitt do it, but I Top Flighted on Saturday too. YeeHa!

I'll sing a chorus of "Hail To Pitt" for the football win and a chorus of "Hail To Bob". Congrats on you Top Flight. :)

How did a Pitt guy get to Texas? You obviously spent time in "the Burg". That's my home town, but I've lived in Maryland for the past 30 years. I was at Pitt from 1964 till 1971.....Undergraduate BS in Chemistry, and DMD degree in Dentistry. My wife is also a Pitt grad, and although she doesn't like to admit it, she graduated in 1968 :) Chuck

The Ravens' loss made it an 0-for-4 weekend for me -- undergrad, grad, hometown (Da Bears!) and current hometown. Somehow, the ND loss seemed to make it all OK....... :D

I took the vette out for a spin this weekend to make sure I'd repaired the fuel leak, and it seemed to be working. It's gotten cold enough that I just leave the convertible top up.

Chuck, I'm a McKees Rocks guy. Born and raised there. Graduated from Pitt in '71 and went into the Air Force. Bought my '71 on my first assignment to California at Norton AFB in 1972. Had it ever since. After 22 years in the AF I retired in '93 and told my wife that after she followed me and mt career for all that time I'd follow her and her career--that's how I wound up in Texas. Thanks for the congrats--I was really sweating having it judged for the first time. It sure feels good now though!

Hey-

It's great to see more folks originally from the Burgh-I'm from the South Hills-Brentwood to be exact. You folks were running around U of Pitt the same time as my Dad. Might have seen him cruisin' in down Forbes in Oakland in his Horizon Blue '60 even.

I was estactic about the Pitt win as well and the only other person who I ever heard say the UNDER THE ARM PITT thing was my uncle who went to Duquesne...but I traveled across the state to head to Lehigh...

But what I don't understand is the thing with the RAVENS! :U No wonder you left for Maryland so long ago...the folks in the Burgh made you because you aren't a STEELERS FAN!! :D

I'm originally from Freedom PA. Where's that, you ask? Near Beaver Falls...Beaver County. The "under the arm.....PITT", was always the unofficial cheer....at least among the students. Had a few uncles who went to Duquesne too.

Was never a Steelers fan. You've got to realize something. I left Pittsburgh in 1972. The Steelers were NEVER big back when I lived there. They were really not widely regarded, and they played in PITT Stadium back then. It wasn't until after I left....mid to late 70's and beyond that they made their mark...the "Steel Curtain" defense, Mean Joe Green, etc. Three Rivers Stadium opened in 1972....that's when the Steeler's took off. So, since I have made Baltimore my home for the past 30 years, I became a Colts fan...then a Ravens fan.

BTW...read the AP Poll. Pitt is ranked 22nd. this week. Also, I've met a LOT of people "down this way" who went to Lehigh. Chuck

Hey Chuck,

No problemo. I'm just a young pup anyway-only 28. I vaguely remember all of those Steeler glory years. Understand that you were already out of town when Franco was making his "Immaculate Reception." I can respect that. I rememeber hearing that is was pretty much SOS-Same old Steelers-every year back in the 60's.

I always just assume that no matter what, if you spent anytime in the Burgh, you automatically became a Stillers fan.

Saw that PITT cracked the top 25 for the first time since 91. Here's to not having a letdown for the TEMPLE game coming up. Oh, by the way, I will be going to the "Backyard Brawl" Pitt-WVU on the 30th and cheering for the PANTHERS.

Thanks for the reply!

Pitt vs. WVU has always been a big rivalry. My dad went to Pitt, and from the time I was a kid...late 50's etc., we had season tix to Pitt football. We also went to some away games. I remember driving to Morgantown BEFORE the Interstates were there. Used to be a 3 hour drive from Pittsburgh. I'll be "rootin" for the Panthers. Looks like they'll get a bowl bid. You can throw away the record book when Pitt plays WVU. Chuck
