Default Air cleaner base finish

What is the correct black for a '71 dual snorkel air cleaner base...gloss
or matte black ?

Neither. It's satin or semigloss or semiflat (pick yer term- it's all the same thing).
The exact degree of gloss causes frequent discussion. Apparently Krylon makes a
black semiflat which is very close to original. I used another brand which was a bit
too glossy but I figure a few months of wear will knock off the excess gloss.

Errrr, uh, ummmm...Macster, we are gonna have to pull yer NCRS judges' card; hand it over. Oops, that's right...you don't have one.

The paint on the air cleaner and the fan is NOT the same ole satin black that's used on everything else. Unless you want judging deducts, you need to paint these two parts with a more glossy paint...not real glossy, but more glossy than the semiflat Krylon.

Of course, if you're not worried about NCRS judging or having it look original, then you can paint it any gloss level you want.

So my somewhat too glossy to be semiflat paintjob may not be wrong after all. Cool!

The only judge's card I have is the one from a judge who I caught speeding one time.... it's a 'get out of jail free' card.

Chuck is correct on this, at least for the 70-72 range. The judging information states that it is glossy but overly so. Almost a slightly satin sheen to gloss paint. Does that make sense? If have ever seen the gloss that GM used on engine parts you wouldn't call it satin or gloss. Somewhere in between those shades.
