Default ( HP ) 327 question please.

hello,

I have a quick question, I hope someone can answer please. I have a 1968 corvette 4spd manual breaks with A/c. It has a 327 with a ( HP ) model stamped engine.

My question is this..... what does the ( HP ) model mean for my 327, does it mean 300 horse power? or 350 horse power???? everywhere I look, it says either or, but I can't find the answer... does anyone really know if it's a 300 horse power or a 350 horse power?

Check the stamp again...I think it is "HT". If it is then it's the 350hp small block. I am going off memory, but I think that was the suffix on my '68. It's been a few years, and my memory isn't getting any better!!!

Black Book:
HE = 327ci 300hp mt
HO = 327ci 300hp at
HP = 327ci 350hp mt / NCRS - HP = 327ci 300hp mt
HT = 327ci 350hp mt

To be sure open the valve cover and look for the heaed# 3917291
this is double camel head for L79 engine 350hp.

I just removed the valve covers, and it does read 3917291 with B29 the same birth date of my 327. Does that mean it's a 350 hp?? so, only the 327 350 hp came powered with camel heads? or does the 300 hourse power come equiped with camel heads as well??

Deleted, as I believe Kurt is more knowledgeable when it comes to numbers than I. Plus he's using the correct reference material.

Avner,
The HP designation is for the L79 327 with the 350 horsepower, with manual transmission, power steering, A/C, & Qjet carb

The HT is the 327 with 350 horsepower but no power steering & A/C combo.
When the power steering is combined with A/C in the L79 motor it goes from HT to HP
Taken from the NCRS Tech & Judging Manual Third Edition page 38.

My 68 coupe, which I purchased from original owner in 1972 and still own, has the HP designation and has the L79 motor with power steering, A/C, Qjet and 4 speed and matches the NCRS Guide so I think the info is correct.
Hope this helps
Kurt

My 68 is L79 HT code, 3917291 heads with power steering only.
I believe the PS is original, but who knows? (I don't have any documentation).

I think some of the ongoing confusion is due to conflicting info within the NCRS books- some quote HP as being base engine (300HP).

Avner,
It's when the power steering is combined with the A/C that they went to the HP designation. I don't know why.
I too have the 3917291 heads.
It's a nice little motor without the expense of the big block.
Love my smallblock
Kurt

That's curious. Meaning additional fuel and anti-freeze for export to Canada?
