(I posted this in the C3 general section as well.)
A couple of years ago I bought a restored original AM/FM mono radio for my 1969 from a guy in California I found through ebay.
I never got time to install it. All I did when I got it was check to see that it looked good and put it back in the box. I am attempting to install it now. I just now pulled out the aftermarket FM/cassette radio and got my new one out to take a look at the wiring.
It seems that I must be missing a part as there is additional 3 prong connector that I don't know what connects to. I am assuming it must connect to an amp or power transistor that I don't have.
I have no idea where to find one of these things or where it is supposed to mount. I have the factory service manuals to this car but I find nothing in there about the radio except how to remove it. There is no mention of this part or diagram of anything.
Another question I have is about the speakers. In the box with the new Radio, there is a note that says be sure to use 8 or 10 ohm speakers and that using 4 ohm speakers will damage the radio.
I just checked some of the Corvette parts houses online and some sell what they call "factory type" speakers but they say they are 4 ohm. If the orginals were 8 or 10 ohm, why would these factory type speakers be 4 ohm? Not sure what I am supposed to do here.
GM calls this a "convector assembly." The stereo gurus can chime in but I think it amounts to the final output transistor for the Corvette radio. One for mono (shown), two for stereo. The AIM shows the mounting location.
You can find these on eBay and swap meets.
Check up under the passsenger's side dash. Your original might still be up there.

Thank you Mike. That's the best photo I've seen yet.
I had a lot of response to this over in the C3 General section as well. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...questions.html
Turns out that there was a convector in the bottom of the box buried in the peanuts.
Now, the thing I need to do is find some new 10ohm speakers.
I called Volunteer Corvette (which also supplies their speakers to Corvette Central). They have a speaker that they list as correct size and correct bracket and wire plug for my 69. However, the speakers are 4 ohm. They will damage an original radio! I can't believe they don't have a warning in their catalog or on their website about this. It's crazy.
I then called turnswitch.com which does sell the right sized speaker in an 8 ohm. He said they are the same impedance at the 10 ohm originals but they rated them differently back then. The speakers don't have the bracket but he said you really don't need it. They do have the clip on them though.
Turnswitch also repairs radios and he confirmed that 4 ohm speakers will damage original radios. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered the speakers from him ($39.95 each).
Today, I remove the RH dash panel and there are no screw holes for the convector in the location where it shows it should be mounted in that picture.
I wonder if my car could have been a radio delete car? I wouldn't think so since it is a 350HP with air conditioning.
I'm confused.
I think I found the answer.
My car must have come with the stereo radio and not the mono. The stereo radio uses 2 external units (one large and one small) where the mono radio uses just the small one.
Take a look at this pic from a '68: http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/wes...dio___ampl.jpg
I do have 2 screw holes underneath that top ridge metal that are 9 1/2 inches apart. That pics make that top unit look about that wide.
So, I will drill the holes and mount my unit like Mike's pic.
