Default 427 Help

I just picked up a BBC. Casting number 3855961, head casting number 3872702. Date code L-28-05 Front number T01121VR. The bore is 4.25 but the casting number says could be both. Can anyone help me identify this motor as to what it might have come out of. Is it a vette motor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Looks like a '66 427, but I can't find the "VR" suffix (which Corvette never used). You have an extra character in the code stamp - sure it isn't T0112IR? The "IR" suffix was a '66 Corvette 427/390 with K19 and Powerglide. It should also have a VIN derivative stamp on the pad.

Default Impala??

Thanks for the replies. Is there a web site that I can go to and get other specs for the Impala? Where did you find that engine code breakdown? Have been searching for days and found nothing with the "V" in it.

Thanks

"IVR" in my references is a '66 Impala/Caprice 396/325hp automatic, but your bore size says 427. '66 was the only year that some engines had the carburetor code as part of the suffix on the engine plant stamp (it was always on the P-O-P code). The "IV" suffix with no stamped third character was the same 396/325hp automatic engine in '65, '67, and '68 full-size cars.

I'm guessing it's a 396 taken to 427 at rebuild.

It is in original reference books. Not online.
