it depends on what you are restoring, how much work you can do vs how much work you cant do and have to pay to have done, and what your plans are for the said car
You have to remember that this is a hobby or an escape if you will. If it is strictly a dollars and sense issue then I would say a body off on an NOM car does not make financial sense. If however it's what you want and you can afford it and you will get lots of enjoyment out of it then go for it.
These are some great answers and it definitely is a hobby. I pulled the dash and glovebox yesterday to get to my leaking heater core and found some rust on the main cross-member right below the windshield. I'm wondering how long I can ignore this problem before the windshield comes off and hits me in face.
I looked up the trim tag and found out it was originally Ermine White. Since it is not numbers matching, I'm seriously considering turning it into a 427 white with the black scoop. The biggest issue is paying for the monster tranny that can support that kind of torque. (You HAVE to replace the stock 327 one right?)
I could always leave the 327 and put a 427 scoop on it (didn't chevrolet do that with some production cars) but I don't like the idea of mis-advertisement.
As far as enjoyment, I'm keeping it. My son is going to have fun with it when he gets a little older too. Thanks for the awesome tips.

I know this is a resto forum but can you all point me in the right direction of a nice 427 motor? Since the muncie 4 speeds were used for both 327 and 427 and the engine is not NOM I am on the hunt.
Just pulled the motor tonight and intend to put it back together much meaner than before.

if you are only going for power and not numbers buy a 454 block of any year and dress it out to look like a 427 of your choice. no one will really know unless you tell them or they start to look at the numbers. but a screaming small block will and can out run a big block any day. you can always have your NOM 350 rebuilt to have all the power you will ever need. just food for thought. keeping your small block and rebuilding it will save you money as well.
another factor is, even if you have 'numbers matching' it is really no guarantee that it is the original engine...
another factor is that even rare big block nuimbers cars are not even a break even for restoration dollars.. it cost so much to just buy a big block project anyway, or to 'create' a numbers car that most people lose or at best break even on the money spent.
if your car is solid with no rust and you do all the work yourself, even the paint, then you may break even when it comes time to sell.. but if you pay somebody retail for parts and labor, you will have a money pit....
