Default Distributor Housing Orientation - 1972, 454

He all ...

Does someone have a pic (original BB 71-72 car) -or - know how the distributor is oriented when it goes back in?

The vacuum advance pod, is it behind the mounting bracket (between the firewall and the dist. sheild bracket) or does it go forward of the mounting bracket (between the bracket and carb)?

Getting down to the nitty gritys now ...

Thanks in advance

Bill

In 69, the vacuum advance is pointed to the passenger fender, most Chevys it gets pointed all but forward. Your assembly manual should show it, mine does.......................B

There should be a factory stake mark on the manifold and the distributor body exactly for this purpose. Set #1 at TDC on the compression stroke, drop the distributor in, and line up the stake marks. Ought to get you in the ballpark for #1 firing when you start her up.

Don't mean to be stupid, but what all do you mean by a "stake" mark?
What does it look like?

If you would take a chisel, and set the point on an aluminum intake and tapped it with a hammer, the line it would make would be considered a stake mark. By what "Easy Mike" is saying, there should be one on the lip of the dist. housing matching one on the intake hole lip, this being the position of the distributor. That is, considering you have the orig. dist and intake from the time of inception of your car.
Now that I know this, I will have to check out all my 69 intakes and dist's. Later................B

Thank you - to all - for the great advice !!

Did she fire? Stake marks could line up, but if #1 is on the exhaust stroke, she won't fire.
