Default Whats the trick?

I am redoing the rear end on my 71 vert. Have bead blasted half shafts, drive shaft and diff casing so they look new. Here is the problem - it has been a couple of weeks now and they are starting to rust again. My NCRS manual says those parts have a "natural" finish and are "unpainted" and also that points are deducted for rust. My question then is how to maintain the "new" no rust look without painting? I have tried Eastwoods clear Rust Encapsulator and am still getting rust. How about clear polyurethane or clear enamel? I have no plans to have the car judged but want it to look right.

Thanks for any replies
Neil

Several options:

Coat with PreLube6 (Quanta has it)
Coat with CorrosionX (www.corrosionx.com)
Paint with Eastwood Diamond Clear (satin)

The first two are less likely to result in a deduction, as they aren't "paint", but need to be re-applied every few months.

I really dig the "cast-blast" paint that provides a fresh cast-iron finish. It goes on easy, and you should be able to get it at your friendly neighborhood parts store. My preference was the NAPA variety, but they switched suppliers. The dupli-color stuff at O'Reilly's is what I use today.

Since you've bead-blasted, you might want to apply some etching primer first before the cast-blast.

I wonder if cosmolene would be acceptable? This would be a good way to preserve bare steel parts without applying a finish.

The only problem with any paint is that it looks painted. If you are looking for judging you will get some hits on that. Cosmolene is VERY greasy - I would stay away from it unless you just want to store something. I use PreLube 6 and swear by it. Buy two cans.

Cosmolene is available in different grades. Some cosmolene can be applied in a thin film and will dry to the touch. I would think this would work and is easily reversible.

I just paint mine with cast blast and take the 1-2 point hit. Chuck

Do you think they didn't rust from the factory?!?!?!? Be realistic and don't be so anal about trivial stuff like surface rust. Drive the car and tell those judges to stay the "F" away from your car..................B

Not all Corvette enthusiasts are interested in driving their cars all the time. Some of us prefer to learn how to do factory correct resto and to compare our work with some of the best skilled and most recognized restorers in the country afterwards to see how close we can get. Getting a from one of those guys is an honor that many will never taste.

Why are you reading the "Factory Correct Resto" forum? Was that blower sticking thru your hood on the option sheet in the mid 70s?

Each to his own.
