Hi All,
This is slightly off topic but...
I figue you guys would know better then anyone else on this.
I have bought white Vinyl boat seats that have sat out for some time and now are dingy greyish/brown from dirt/sun neglect.
I figure I can clean them up pretty good with various products, but they won't ever be shiny white again.
I have used black Vinyl dye from Volvette on interior trim peices on a C3 before and it covers just like spray paint.
So here are my questions:
Black is too dark but I was thinking of a really bright red like firethorn or whatever is the brightest red I can find.
Does it cover like paint so the upholstery will be a nice uniform covered red?
Does the dye work on vinyl seats or just rigid interior pieces? does it stick to seat surfaces and wear well?
Will it cover the dingy grey/dirt/discolored area evenly like painting it would or will the discoloration come through the dye?
What is the brightest/lightest red available?
Is there a bright yellow available like for 96' grand sport seats?
Is there white dye available.
3 years ago I pulled out the white vinyl seats from my '66 coupe. They were dingy, had some yellowing and even had brown stains where the hinges rubbed. I separated them, took off the backs, etc. I wiped them down with laquer thinner (some will say not to use that) and proceeded to spray them with the expensive, ($12 a can) gotten through the Corvette supplier white interior dye. Didn't work very well. It was so thin, I think I'd still be coating them today. I drove over to Autozone and bought 2 cans ($3.99 each) of Duplicolor White vinyl dye. Sprayed several coats on until everything was covered (up). This stuff has some pigment to it. They looked great, and I'll tell you what, they still do. They clean right up with an interior wipe. The only issue is some discoloration again where the hinges rub when tilting the seat forward. I never would have believed that they would turn out so nice, and wear so well. These are the original seat covers, by the way- 37 years old when I did them.
