My '64 365hp Coupe with its stock 4 speed shifter is now more than occasionally locking up in two gears when backing up and then shifting from reverse to first. I've adjusted the shifter and the linkage per the manual without the problem improving much. I'm tired of crawling under the car to free it up, so I think it's time for a replacement. I'd like your opinion whether I should first replace just the linkage pieces (rods, adjusters, and clips) or bite the bullet and buy a new repro stock shifter as well.
Take the shifter out and disassemble it. Then squeeze the main case back together. It is spread open and it lets the shifter handle slip between the shifter arm plates. Eliminate the gap and it will work fine again.
