Default need advice on shop manuals and restoration books, ready to pull the engine on the 6

We have the 427 ready to come outta the car we had just planned to detail it but will probably go ahead and go through the engine except the block and all unless we see something that needs tended to.

So from here I guess we need to go ahead and get some good books on the engine that would give torque specs etc... we will need in order to get it back together right when were ready. Were going to keep everything to stock specs so we need a shop manual that isn't for modifying so will a HAYNES manual do the job for this part of the project?

also need one that is about the restoration of a 68...something that tells what paint code color was used to paint the block (yeah i know chevy orange) but other things too like how to do the intake up right, exhaust manifolds and things like that just to keep us inline so it comes out looking right like it did new.

so were wanting to stay very stock and original so do you recommend certain ones? here are some I've came across on eckerls.

thanks and I will have some pictures up soon to show what we've got done so far!

so far Zip seems to have the best shop manual it say it is a "Reprint of the original shop manuals available from the Chevrolet dealer". and that "It is broken down into basic operating systems and shows how to disassemble and rebuild components. Wiring diagrams included." anyone used this one before?

I've done frame-on restorations on two Corvettes ('68 convertible and an '80 L-82) and regular maintenance on three (ditto, plus my '74). In each case, the single most hepful reference work for me was the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM) for each. I can recommend the AIM.

None of the links work, but I'd recommend the following (instead of the Haynes manual, which is WAY too generic):

Corvette Shop Manual, 1966-82
1968 Corvette Assembly Instruction Manual
1968 Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual
Corvette Restoration Guide, 1968-'82
1968-69 Corvette Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide

All of the above are available from the NCRS on-line store at www.ncrs.org. The TM & Judging Guide will tell you exactly what it's supposed to look like, the Restoration Guide will help you get there, and the Assembly Manual has ALL the detail.

thanks! thats what I was looking for! but I didn't see the "Corvette Shop Manual, 1966-82" or the "Corvette Restoration Guide, 1968-'82" or did I not look in the right place? I found the others though.

They're in there - take another tour and you'll find them.

In addition to John's good advice, I have seen folks that use the AIM as a DIS-assembly guide, making notes along the way about bolt sizes and finishes. That way, when you are ready for the reassembly you have your AIM with all of its great info plus your notes.
