Default Copo camaro

Saw this last week at Henry Brown Buick/GMC in Gilbert AZ. The story behind it is, the owner of the vehicle ordered a COPO Camaro in '69. He was drafted into the Army and could not take delivery of the vehicle and lost it. He is a technician at that dealer and entered a lottery to get a chance to purchase one of 69 new COPOs, won and now owns #17. This is a factory race car, not street legal. This one is a 427 naturally aspirated with a huge tunnel ram intake. I believe there are 2 different 5.3L supercharged versions available. What a beast, enjoy these photos.

Steve

Other than exhaust and tires, why is it not street legal?

The vehicle is gutted. No working odometer, airbags, turn signals... It has a 2 speed power glide trans and very tall gears. The dash looks complete but nothing works. Built for the track only.

Thanks for viewing.

these are cool,,but you could build a copy using a $7k body-in-white and a gm crate motor for less then $50k

Professionally built super stock cars are incredibly expensive. It's a whole lot more than a body in white and crate motor. They sold 69 of those COPOs for 90ish, and I'd be surprised if there was any profit there. Probably more of a promotional effort. You'd be very hard pressed to find another turn key pro built super stock car for under 6 figures.

Depending which engine, additional tinkering... some of the COPOS are running mid/high 8's. Some have needed to add a parachute. I need to win the lottery some day and get one.

The March 2013 issue of Car Craft magazine has an 8 page story with 26 pics showing the building of the new COPOs.
