Default Heard bad stuff about Dex Cool

I had my 2000 Z28 at a coin op car wash yesterday and the guy next to me in the dry off area had a brand new Nissan sedan. He asked me what year my Camaro was and asked if I was running Dex Cool antifreeze in the car. I told him it was a 2000 and, yes, I was using Dex Cool. He said that he had had a 2000 Gran Prix and that Dex Cool had clogged up his radiator and water passages and killed the engine. Said there was a class action suit against GM for lots of similar experiences. Anyone know anything about this? I've got 117K on the Camaro and it still runs as strong as ever.

That story has been going around as long as Dex-Cool has been in use. My '96 Camaro has the stuff in it, and after 14 years and 75,000 miles, everything is just fine.

The key to surviving with Dex-Cool is to maintain the correct level in your overflow tank, as excess contact with air will "dry out" the stuff, and cause it to get sludgy. Secondly, you should change it out every 4-5 years, as directed by GM.

My car will be 14 years old this October, I've changed the coolant 4 times over that period....everything's A-OK!

The main issue is the gasket materials in your motor. I had a '01 Malibu and have a '00 Grand Am and I had to change the upper and lower intake gaskets because of it. GM did issue a TSB but not a recall.

there is a law suit against it. had a water pump replaced on a cargo van. the garage that did the repair hated dex cool. they flushed the system and put "universal" fluid in.

This would be the one situation where I decided to "go green"

I have pictures of my original radiator core somewhere that was completely clogged after switching to dexcool in my 69. My heater core soon followed and burst a leak. This was in a span of about 2 weeks of each other after never having issues with either. I had been running the dex cool for about a year at that point.

Of course, this was almost 10 years ago. I have not used the stuff since.

It appears that you're quoting my post, as some sort of mis-information about Dex-Cool. You mention a "69".....I assume a '69 Chevy of some sort, a car that originally came with the "green" coolant. Why would you put Dex-Cool in it? It was designed for the "green stuff", just like the later cars are designed for the Dex-Cool. Under those circumstances, it doesn't surprise me that you had issues, especially if you didn't get 110% of the green coolant out, as they definitely DO NOT mix.

At the time the parts stores were pushing it pretty heavily for all cars, and I did a full flush before doing it.

The 69 is the Corvette in my Avatar, again this was around 2000 or so, I didn't know any better. It did screw up my entire cooling system pretty royally. Had the same issue in my 68 Camaro.

I think they had an issue with the very early formula of DexCool. I just changed out a leaky water pump on my 02 Avalanche w/ 90,000 miles. The Dex Cool and insides of all the cooling system looked like brand new. I have a 00' Grand Prix w/ 171,000 miles and have had no issues.

If the car didnt come with DexCool originally, you shouldnt use it as it is not compatible with traditional "green" coolant.

The intake recall mentioned previously was not do to the coolant it was the intake bolts.
