I checked out a Camaro today and it seemed to have a bit of roar in the rear of the body on the highway. I haven't noticed that in others but haven't been on the same section of road. I wasn't sure, but I think it was still there at lower speeds on the surface streets.
The car has 86,000 on it and is the V6, if that makes a difference.
Another I looked had seemed to have a bit of shimmy when taking off and running about 10-20 mph. How complicated is the front end alignment? Is it a standard alignment or is there a bunch of things Chevy requires that makes this one more work and more costly?
A roaring noise from the rear end is probably a bearing in the rear end, and most of the time, it is the pinon bearing. 10 bolt axles are notorious for starving the pinon bearing of oil, which causes it to wear and start making noise. Budget about $600 or so to have the rear end professional rebuilt (replace bearings and seals).
The alignment on a 4th gen is pretty simple. There are slotted mounting holes to allow the adjustment of camber and caster (and of course toe is adjustable). A bad alignment, however, wouldn't cause a shimmy unless it was really, really, really off.
Thanks, it is good to know. My '89 GMC has the wonderful GM corporate thinking of "let's save money by not making it adjustable" front end. As such, an alignment means the front has to be cut apart and an adjustable alignment kit installed.
I was afraid that by the time they got to '97 with Camaros, they had invented even more money saving ideas.
I have a 2000 Camaro and my bearing froze in the rearend. I had to get a new housing and while at it put an Auburn diff and 3:42's in
Runs like a champ now.
If your in the market for an F-Body I can give you in fo on mine

I sell a lot of Moser 12 bolt and 9 inch rearends for these cars. The Moser 9 inch is my most popular seller, and is designed to be a direct bolt in.
