I have worked on my share of 3rd gens.............and owned a few:
As for what cars were suppose to have and came from the factory with and was an option.........are no less
today than 40 years ago, anything is possible..........my 1989 checy p/u came loaded with heavy duty everything from the factory for a diesel..........but had the 4.3 v-6 
My 00' coupe ordered new was suppose to only have main cats.........it also came with the pup cats........even though many said " impossible"....at the end of a model year or during parts shortages they will put on whats needed to get it out the door

well for what its worth the car is gone for 2k. not running with half the options missing wheels heater controls etc. thanks for the interest in the topic!
