So I am getting ready to reinstall the distributor off of my 72' 350. I replaced the end drive gear and in doing so came across a few questions. There is one shim that I assume is there to take up some of the end play. But there is still quite a bit of play, I would say at least 3 or 4 more shims worth...

Is this the end play I here often associated with erratic timing shifts? If so what is acceptable? My timing light is a little to premative so I havn't had a chance to check the advance very accurately.

Also, as I spin the rotor and ditributor shaft I feel a little clicking friction. Is this normal?

I am planning on doing my Timing tomorrow and as such was looking for what my initial timing should be set to. I would also like to know where my dwell should be at (28-32?) and what my total Timing should be at (36?).
I have the 1970 Chassis Service Manual and the AIM for 1970 yet I can not find it in either of the books (granted the 70 Chassis Manual is for 69 Vettes).

Today we performed a comprehensive dyno comparison between the dyno numbers I received from...

Today we performed a comprehensive dyno comparison between the dyno numbers I received from Vortecpro (Mark Jones) on his dyno in Colorado at 6300'(1.26 CF) and our local dyno 1500 miles away outside of Houston Tx, close to Sea Level, VERY small correction factor of .98. This dyno is at Owens Racing Engines in Pearland Tx. Owens has the reputation of the accurate dyno in town and their numbers ALWAYS are backed up at the local racetrack which is Houston Raceway Park. Pretty much Owens is THE dyno to use for ACCURATE numbers. Pretty interesting day to say the least.

To recap, Mark built me a 9.8-1 comp, mild HYD roller 496", RPM air gap and 850 DP holley. He shipped it to me with 661.9hp/675tq (Corrected) and 485/510 (Actual @ 6300'). Ofcourse there has been much hoopla about his builds and his numbers and questions of dyno accuracy.. Well I think you will find that the data below will change ALL thoughts about Mark Jone's dyno numbers and his integrity....

First off, The weather was horrible, it had been raining for the last 24 hrs and was raining outside the entire time we were dynoing. Temps in the upper 60*s, humidity was 71%+ all day...SUCKED.....

Let me tell you, we tried to duplicate the dyno pulls EXACTLY how Mark did them, same water/oil temps, same timing, same breathers, same flexplate,....EVERYTHING....only a jetting change to get the air fuel ratio to match his for our altitude... We were on the phone with Mark and he was calling the shots on the tuning the entire time....Here is what we found....

***Below are CORRECTED numbers, only .98 CF though***

Peak:

Detuned slightly for detonation protection(we saw just a TAD of knock at 5700rpms, probably not enough to hurt it but we are tuning for longetivity:

No carb hat, no air cleaner, just open carb..

Idling and a pull

Just incase you are questioning the Correction factors here.... the ACTUAL or OBSERVED HP was 625hp in total sh*t conditions.

SPECIAL THANKS TO MARK JONES FOR BUILDING AN ABSOLUTE ANIMAL OF AN ENGINE AND HELPING ME GET THROUGH ALL THE BS....The engine ran flawlessly all day, not a drop of a leak, fired right up every time, idled with 15hgs of vacuum and was very efficient....Could not ask for a better street motor....BAR NONE....

I have an auto transmission in a 1973 that originally had a manual transmission. One of the first steps in the procedure for removing an auto transmission is to remove the transmission mounting crossmember. In my car the transmission crossmember is not removable it is welded as was the case with manuals, can I get the auto gearbox out without moving the engine forward. If I take the extension housing off the rear of the housing will this give me enough clearance to drop the transmission. Any hints would be great.

I drove my frist vette home today! I am in love :auto:

Okay, its a 1980 model and all stock except dash. I have a few questions on various things... oh... yes I have the repair manual - its useless!

1.) Battery warning light/choke light comes on and flashes. The faster I go the more flashing it does... slower I go the slower the flash. Thinking bad ground some where? Where should I start looking?

2.) Where can I buy a seat motor for the driver side power seat?

3.) Where should I start to figure out why the power door locks don't work?

4.) I have about 2" play in the steering wheel while driving. I know there is a power steering leak. What should I start to look at and fix to correct the play in the steering? I am thinking of buying the full steering kit (ram, power steering, hoses) but will that fix my problem? I have not checked out the balljoints yet.

5.) What does your vette RPM idle at while sitting at the lights?

Thats all I can think of right this second. This car is sweet!

Thanks everyone!
