Hi Per. Passenger Mark 4 ok for 1000 hp ?
As most of you know I plan on turning up the wick on my 454 and shooting for 1000 hp with the aid of a bunch of nitrous. Going to limit the rpms to just over 7000. I have all good parts, bottom studs, Carrillo rods, Bryant crank, JE pistons, etc. The block is a standard mark 4 Hi per 4 bolt. Can I / should I fill this block, anything I should do to make it live.

I would use ARP main and head studs. Maybe larger steel main caps. HP is not what kills a motor. It's rpm.
I go to the Nastalgia Nitro races. They have to run stock big blocks and I've heard them talk about the block being the HP limiting factor. So they can't over drive the blower much and they use a lower % of Nitro and Alky mix. Most seem to be 496's

John, given your history of how fast you flash through a combo before you step up to the next thing I would suggest getting a Dart or World block. This way you will be part of the way there when you get tired of mid 9 second passes (which should be like what - maybe after 6 passes in the 9's?).
As suggested it is rpms over hp that is the issue. For sure stud the block, and I would run the lightest/stongest rotating assembly (but no aluminum rods) that you can afford. Factory rat blocks are suprisingly sturdy into the power range you are after. The usual cautions apply: check for core shift on the cylinders and lifter bores - standard stuff for a quality machine shop.

Re: Hi Per. Passenger Mark 4 ok for 1000 hp ? (The Green Rocket)
Thanks Tom, your observations about my upping the ante constanally is pretty funny. Believe it or not I am going to stay at the 1000 hp level for this car. My tranny and rear end are both good for 1000 hp and I do not want to be fixing them all the time. As long as I can roll past the Mopar nuts at the Garden Grove show with a 9.5 shoe polish number in the rear window, I will be plenty happy.
I am going to take my time and do this motor as right as I can within my budget. I do not know if you know him (Steve) the guy with the silver 67 Goat works for Byrant, he is going to help me do the motor. I am thinkng of using Vrbanic Bros for the engine dyno. If I remember right you are a fan of thiers. There may be a magizine article about the motor when we dyno it.

Hey, you gotta admit for having only a few drag passes under your belt you have gone pretty hog wild on big power. At the 1,000 hp level you can still expect things to break, they may be "rated" to that power level - but for how long? I've seen plenty of racers who I respect who have *left* parts at various points down the track while running at lower power levels. You know how you can tell that you've been racing? - by the accumulating pile of broken parts that you will have :)
I don't really know Steve (nice Goat, I like silver) - just another guy I have been bumping shoulders with at car shows and drag races over the years. If Steve has experience setting up rats huffing copious amounts of juice then he already knows the critical areas and piston/ring setup that calls for.
Yes, I do believe in the Brothers Vrbancic. No shop likes to run/flog engines that they didn't themselves build - but I do know the brothers will do a number of tip in dyno pulls to determine if the engine is healthy enough for full dyno pulls. I also prefer the way they have set up their DTS dyno - an excellent selection of sensors and probes to determine the quality of ignition, carburation, power, and how evenly it is all distributed to all the cylinders.
The Mopar Knights will be in hiding when you get finished, although I'll be the first to admit that they have put together some stoutly powered show cars - they often have some of the nicest cars at the weekly Garden Grove cruise. But I can barely remember when I've seen any of them make their last drag passes.
A 1,000 hp engine for the street will be a great feature article engine build up. Next time I see you lets swap notes on magazine people to contact.

Re: Hi Per. Passenger Mark 4 ok for 1000 hp ? (The Green Rocket)
Tom: I plan on being at the Garden Grove show tomorrow (donut shop Saturday also). I have a new Black V-rod I want to show off. I promised I was going to keep that bike stock except for a few cosmetivc things, then today I saw a 44 hp nitrous kit for them MMMMmmmmmmm.
Steve will be a big help building and blue printing the motor. I rely on Mike Thermos for the NOS tech stuff. He is opening a new nitrous supply / tech shop in Huntington Beach at Mcfadden and Gramm. I would like to do some playing with the higher pressure nitorus tunes.
I don't have any magizine contacts, but Mike has lots. He knows the Vrbanic Bros well also.

John, you're way beyond my knowledge, but I gotta say that I get a kick out of reading your posts. 1000 hp, race tranny, and a spool out back. Quite a ride. Good luck with the new build! I feel like girl shooting for low 600s...

I could have the motor done in two or three weeks, but the snows about to start falling around here so there's no rush. Realistically, the engine will be in the car and ready to run in March or April. Things were really moving, the entire shortblock was assembled and the oil pan was on before I figured out that the machine shop didn't take the .030 off the deck that I asked them too. They only cut it .010, so I had to take everything apart again to have it redone. I just got the block back on the stand in the garage last night.
