Default Fired her up,... then hit it...Bad Cappy....Bad Cappy

Fired her right up.....then hit it....I guess it takes a while for oil to get up to the lifters.....
started clacking real loud....then it slowly went away.....now no noise at all......Should I tear her down....see if I hurt something....or spank myself for doing a NO-NO? :D :seeya Cappy

Chances are it's fine. Is this a brand new motor? Did you do a prelube? I usually give my engine a minute or two before I RAP on the gas.

Engine is about a year old.....I just didn't give any time to warm up or get the oil to the top side.....drove her straight out on to the street and hit it.....then the clacking sound.....It went away after the engine warmed up.....but it sure scared the ba-jee-zee's out of me.....I thought I threw a pushrod or something serious...... :flag :seeya Cappy

Definitely not a good idea to romp on a cold motor, that's a good way to spin a bearing. I always leave my electric fans off until my motor gets up to around 160 degrees then I'll flip them on. No matter how tempting it is to get on a cold motor you should certainly wait until it warms up. The majority of a motor's wear occurs upon start up while the motor is cold.

bence13_33,
Yep.....I surely screwed up and learned my lesson.....Hope I didn't hurt anything in there.....I assume a lifter colllapsed, then as oil got up to the top she pumped right up.....Very spooky....and this motor is fairly new.....Thanks for the advice..... :flag :seeya Cappy

BTW.....I predict next time out....you'll hit the magic 11's.....Aloha

Kalani....

Nope.....if there are pictures out there....I sure can't find anyone who took some....Too bad since this was a awesome cruise of multi-Vettes and Hot rods and motorcycles....I was leading....so I could only see what was behind me in my rear view mirror....from what I could see it was the longest line up of cars and bikes ever gathered on the island with American Flags flying.
Next time I'm going to bring up the rear.....up front sucks....then I can get shots of the whole parade. :flag :seeya Cappy

Cappy are you looking for a reason to justify that 454 sb  :jester

Sounds like everything is ok if the noise isn't constant :)

You should tear it down, bore it and stroke, immediately. :D

John Row......

This is more serious then I thought.....I need a new engine.
Hmmmmmm......let me see?
Okay,
454 ci Small Block ......yeah.....that's the ticket.....454 ci Small Block.....I'll tell her the only way to fix this is a 454 ci Small Block....
I spoke with folks at Bill Mitchell about building a 454 ci Small Block from my 415 ci small block....however I may run into problems with clearances for the cam and the increase in stroke.....also the 220 Motown heads are valved with 2.125 intakes and the cam train is a solid lifter......I have a brand new set of AFR 210 Heads....still in the box...that are too small for a 454 ci....and a new set of Comp hydrualic rollers with cam that might float.....life's a bitch with so many combo's that don't fit your wants.....
I have a major savings program in affect and will get the 454 ci Small Block shortly......I'm also selling parts.....Complete Trailing arms....1981 Rear End 2:80 I think....Set of brand new 10" MT ET Streets.....Brand new AFR 210 heads angle milled 64cc with dual high performance springs and matching gasket set.....Comp high lift hyd roller cam and lifters....Completely assembled cast iron 220 Motown Heads.......etc..... :flag :seeya Cappy

Cappy,
Did your car make the magazine? Perhaps a follow up article on the 454 build up? Just for kicks check out the complete 454 small block in the new Jegs catalog. For a complete motor, the price insn't bad.
Good luck,

I waited for the guy to show up to take the photo's for Magazine....nothing. That really sucks because I went way over board with cleaning and detailing...my fingers were raw. Polished everything in the engine compartment...shampoo'd the carpets and treated all the leather hides.....polished to remove every swirl mark.....and metal polished all the rims....and slid under car for a wipe down.... :mad
Making an appointment then failing to keep it.... :mad That sure sets my hair on fire.
I seen the 454 ci in the Jeg's catalog....sweet engine....then read about it in Chevy High Performance....I want that engine so bad.....Here's my predicament....I have the Beck Racing 383 sitting on an engine stand ready for a new forged rotating assembly.
I have my 415 ci in the car.....
and I want one more engine.....
So I called Bill Mitchell Engine Shop and spoke with Mike. Here's the choices.
1. Buy 454 ci Crate Engine Completely Assembled.
2. Remove 415 ci and order their 427 ci rotating assembly and build up a killer 427 ci. I cannot build 454 ci from 415 ci without boring and stroking.
3. Build two (2) Street Killer Engines from what I have on hand....sell both engines and order the 454 ci. I hate dumping a lot of money into the other two engines then having to wait for them to sell.....Might as well order the 454 ci and shelf the other two engines....Mess with them later...

Cappy, I would love to buy some of your parts , but you being in on an island really make that not worth it! Good luck on the 454SB, that would be soooo bad arse
