Default Are head land rings used anymore?

I was reading an older hotrodding book and they talked about head land rings and what they did.

Are they used anymore, or has something else come along instead?

I'm not sure, but I believe those fell out in favor of gas ports.

The gas ports intersect the back of the top ring groove, supplying cylinder
pressure to the back of the ring. I've only seen this used in naturally aspirated drag race engines.

it is now done by end milling half circles above the top ring groove and this allows the compression to get behind the top ring and push it outward for a better on the compression stroke because the top ring they use has very little radial tension to cut down on the ring drag on the cylinder walls. it is done this way because the drilled holes in the top of the piston could plug up with carbon. :chevy
