I am running a high compression motor (13:1)
and want to make sure the air/fuel ratio and timing are set properly to avoid detonation, but maximize performance. What is the best technique to check for the proper ratio and timing.
My previous motor took chunks out of 3 pistons which I presume was from detonation. The car is so loud it is extremely hard to hear any detonation. I don't want the same outcome on my new motor.

Most dyno shops will monitor the AFR with a wide band o2 during a pull for a small extra fee. Or you can invest in your own wbo2 onboard system for $350-400.
I like the on board method because it shows me in real time how my tune is holding up.
